NEW: House Democrat Strongly Endorses Trump’s Tariff Strategy

A House Democrat who has won multiple elections in a staunchly pro-Trump district has emerged as one of the most ardent defenders of the president’s tariff policies in Congress.

U.S. Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), who has won multiple razor close elections in a district Trump carried by nine percentage points back in November, is defending the president, outflanking a number of anti-Trump Republicans who have introduced bills to strip away the the commander-in-chief’s ability to levy tariffs. The Maine lawmaker is instead urging the president to stick by his plan and to tune out detractors.

“I’m pleased the president is building his tariff agenda on the foundation of a universal 10 percent tariff like the one I proposed in the BUILT USA Act. This ring fence around the American economy is a good start to erasing our unsustainable trade deficits,” Golden said when Trump slapped tariffs on dozens of trading partners on April 2.

“I’m eager to work with the president to fix the broken “free trade” system that made multinational corporations rich but ruined manufacturing communities across the country. But tariffs must be paired with policies that prioritize American families’ prosperity,” the congressman added, stressing that he wants to see an economic policy that benefits working class Americans.

As pressure from Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans mounts in the aftermath of a number of tough days for the market, Golden is urging the president to stick to the plan. “My biggest worry is that they’re [the Trump administration] going to do this and lose faith and political will and back away,” the House Democrat told Axios on Tuesday.

Golden, who introduced legislation to put a 10 percent tariff on all goods entering the United States, went on to deliver a stern warning to his party. “The world is changing, and some Democrats haven’t quite caught up to that fact.”

The Democrat lawmaker’s support highlights the somewhat unorthodox coalitions of support and dissent to the administration’s sweeping trade reforms. A number of Republican Senators, Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Todd Young (R-IN) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) introduced a bill that would require congressional approval to levy tariffs.

Trump has vowed to veto the bill, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has suggested that he will not bring it to a floor vote. Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE) and John Hurd (R-CO) have introduced companion legislation in the House, stating that they are hopeful it will pick up steam the Senate bill passes.

While Trump seeks to manage Republican detractors, he has received additional support from key members of the Democratic Party’s coalition. The United Auto Workers Union (UAW), which has long endorsed Democrats and campaigned for Biden and Harris in 2024, has enthusiastically endorsed the president’s plan.

“We applaud the Trump administration for stepping up to end the free trade disaster that has devastated working class communities for decades. Ending the race to the bottom in the auto industry starts with fixing our broken trade deals, and the Trump administration has made history with today’s actions,” Fain said in a statement earlier this month.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has also endorsed Trump’s tariffs, describing them as a way to bring back manufacturing and union jobs to American workers.
