NEW: Harrowing Particulars Emerge On Advanced Mission That Rescued Downed Airman
A number of harrowing details have emerged on the daring U.S. Military operation that led to the successful rescue of a downed U.S. Airman who was stranded in Southwest Iran since his F-15 aircraft went down on Friday morning.
One crew member, the pilot, was recovered in an initial search-and-rescue effort shortly after the aircraft went down on Friday morning. The second crew member, a colonel serving as the weapons systems officer, then evaded capture for approximately 36 to 48 hours in the mountainous terrain of Isfahan province.
U.S. military and intelligence agencies immediately launched a coordinated operation to locate and extract the missing airman.
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) played a major role in the effort by running a disinformation campaign inside Iran, Fox News reported. U.S. intelligence spread information indicating that the airman had already been located and was being moved overland for exfiltration.
The campaign was designed to divert Iranian search efforts and leadership attention away from the actual rescue activities. CIA assets also contributed to pinpointing the airman’s location in a mountain crevice after he made contact or was tracked through available means.
The operation involved the deployment of hundreds of U.S. special operations forces, including ground teams from Navy SEAL units. Support included dozens of U.S. warplanes and helicopters, while two special forces teams operated on the ground in Iran for roughly 36 hours.
To support insertion and extraction, U.S. forces established a temporary airstrip at a remote site, described in some reports as an abandoned airport south of Isfahan. MC-130J Commando II aircraft, configured for covert infiltration and exfiltration behind enemy lines, were used at this forward location.
As teams moved towards the airman’s location, a significant number of U.S. Air Force assets engaged Iranian Basij and other regime forces as they attempted to close in. It is unclear exactly how many Iranian forces were killed, though state media confirmed that several casualties were recorded.

No U.S. personnel were reported killed or seriously wounded in these engagements beyond the airman’s pre-existing injuries, President Donald Trump confirmed in a statement just after midnight.
During the extraction phase of the operation, two MC-130J transport planes became immobilized at the temporary airstrip. U.S. commanders determined that the aircraft could not be flown out due to technical or environmental factors and ordered them destroyed to prevent sensitive equipment from falling into enemy hands.
Three additional transport aircraft were then dispatched to the site to complete the extraction of the airman, the special operations personnel, and all supporting elements. All participants were successfully removed from Iranian territory and flown to safety, with the rescued airman transferred to Kuwait for medical evaluation.

The extracted airman suffered injuries during the ejection, though his condition has since been described as stable.
The operation has been characterized by U.S. sources as one of the more complex search-and-rescue efforts conducted in recent years, given the requirement to operate inside Iranian territory while managing active Iranian pursuit.
“This is the first time in military memory that two U.S. Pilots have been rescued, separately, deep in Enemy Territory. WE WILL NEVER LEAVE AN AMERICAN WARFIGHTER BEHIND! The fact that we were able to pull off both of these operations, without a SINGLE American killed, or even wounded, just proves once again, that we have achieved overwhelming Air Dominance and Superiority over the Iranian skies,” President Trump announced in a social media post after the operation’s conclusion.
“We truly have the best, most professional, and lethal Military in the History of the World. GOD BLESS AMERICA, GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS, AND HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!”
