President Donald Trump is already looking ahead to the next presidential race, offering a confident prediction about who will take the White House in 2028—even as his current administration faces mounting scrutiny over escalating tensions abroad.
During a phone interview on Fox News on Thursday, Trump was asked to respond to critics who say his recent military actions against Iran run counter to his previous campaign promises to avoid foreign conflicts. He also spoke about the next election cycle.
“Well, I would say that it will be a Republican. I really believe that, and I think it’ll be a good one,” Trump said. “I think we have a combination of people that would be very good. You put together a little combination, I think it would be hard to beat the combination.”
The president stopped short of naming a specific successor but suggested that a potential Republican ticket could be built from a “combination” of strong candidates within the party.
“So I think you can figure that out. But I think it’s going to be… I do believe it’s going to be a Republican. I hope so, because we’ve made so many great strides. It would be a shame to see that thrown away,” he added.

The early picture of the 2028 Republican presidential field is starting to take shape, and while it remains fluid, a few names are already emerging as the most likely contenders. JD Vance is widely viewed as the frontrunner, leading early national primary polling by a significant margin and benefiting from his current position and proximity to Trump.
Trump himself has suggested that a future Republican ticket involving Vance or Marco Rubio would be “hard to beat,” reinforcing both men as early favorites. Rubio, who continues to build influence within the party, sits firmly in that top tier alongside Vance.
Behind them, Donald Trump Jr. has shown surprising strength in early polling, largely driven by name recognition and continued appeal within the Republican base, though it remains unclear whether he would actually run. Ron DeSantis, once seen as Trump’s top rival, is still considered a viable contender, though his standing has cooled compared to previous cycles. Beyond that group, a broader second tier of Republicans is actively positioning for a potential run.
