Music legend Morrissey cancels two American concert events after assassination risk on Bluesky
Morrissey was scheduled to play in Boston and Connecticut.
British singer Steven Patrick Morrissey, formerly of The Smiths, has called off two New England concerts after his team warned of a “credible threat” to his safety. The cancellations follow news that a man in Ottawa was charged in connection with a purported online death threat linked to Morrissey’s Sept. 12 festival appearance in Canada.
An Instagram post by Morrissey read: “In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life,” the Instagram post read. “Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and audience, tonights engagement at Foxwoods has been cancelled. We appreciate your understanding.”
The shows — scheduled for Friday at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., and Saturday at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston — will not go ahead.
The decision to cancel the shows comes amid heightened concern over security at live events after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot at a college event in Utah on Sept. 10, an attack that has prompted a national conversation about leftist political violence.
A Bluesky account posted: “Steven Patrick Morrissey when you perform at TD Place here in Ottawa next week on the evening of September 12th, 2025 at about 9pm, I will be present at the venue in the audience and I will attempt to shoot you many times and kill you with a very large gun that I own illegally,”
Canadian authorities say 26-year-old Noah Castellano posted the threat on Bluesky on Sept. 4, ahead of Morrissey’s CityFolk set in Ottawa. He was arrested on Sept. 12 and charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He was already been released on bail.
Bluesky has recently become a hotbed of far-left celebrations of violence against conservatives.
Morrissey could be perceived as a potential target of said violence, as his views are heterodox and have resulted in rage directed at him from so-called progressives.
Morrissey recently offered to sell his share of royalties to The Smiths back catalogue and merchandise, citing the relentless smears he has had to endure for speaking his mind.
Both venues confirmed ticket refunds will be provided.
