‘Melania’ Documentary Tops Amazon Prime Film Chart After Debut
The documentary film “Melania,” which focuses on First Lady Melania Trump, reached the number one spot on Amazon Prime Video’s movie charts in the United States shortly after its streaming debut.
Released on March 9, the film climbed climbed to the top position by the following day, according to data from FlixPatrol. While it primarily dominated in the U.S., it also entered the top 10 in several international markets, including reaching number two in South Africa and number three in Ireland and Romania.
The First Lady acknowledged the film’s streaming success in a social media post, in which she shared a graphic celebrating its success on Amazon Prime.

Directed by Brett Ratner and produced by Amazon MGM Studios, “Melania” provides an account of the 20 days leading up to the Trump family’s return to the White House following the 2024 election. The film draws from Melania Trump’s perspective during this transitional period in early 2025, offering insights into her experiences and preparations.
Amazon acquired the documentary for a reported $40 million, with an additional $35 million allocated to promotion, making it one of the more expensive projects in its category.
The film made its theatrical debut on January 30, 2026, following a premiere at the Trump-Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on the previous day.
It opened in 1,778 theaters across the U.S. and earned a little over $7 million in its opening weekend. This figure represented the strongest debut for a nonfiction feature in over a decade, surpassing the $5 million opening of the 2023 documentary “After Death” from Angel Studios.
Its $7 million debut outperformed expectations and beat out action films like Jason Statham’s Shelter, which opened to $5.5 million. The film ultimately grossed around $16.4 million domestically before concluding its theatrical run after about five weeks.
Excluding concert films and Disney nature documentaries, “Melania” set a benchmark for political and biographical nonfiction releases.
