Marjorie Taylor Greene to Resign from Congress in January After Rift with Trump
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent Georgia Republican and former ally of President Donald Trump, announced Friday that she will resign from Congress effective January 5, 2026, following a public rift with the president and growing frustration over legislative gridlock in Washington.
In a lengthy statement posted online, Greene said she has “always represented the common American man and woman” and that she has been “despised in Washington, D.C., and never truly belonged”. She criticized both major parties for failing to deliver meaningful change for average Americans, citing rising costs, job insecurity, and the erosion of the American dream.
Greene highlighted her efforts to pass bills aligned with President Trump’s executive orders, but lamented that many of her legislative priorities remained unaddressed, including measures to count only Americans in the census, make English the official language, and restrict certain visa programs.
Greene also detailed her recent break with President Trump, referencing her push for the release of government files related to Jeffrey Epstein and other policy disagreements. She accused Trump of directing millions of dollars against her and described the prospect of a contentious primary as a reason for her decision to step down.
“I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for,” she wrote.
President Trump responded to Greene’s resignation on Truth Social, calling her a “traitor” and suggesting her decision was driven by declining poll numbers and the prospect of facing a primary challenger backed by Trump himself.
“Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown, because of PLUMMETING Poll Numbers, and not wanting to face a Primary Challenger with a strong Trump Endorsement (where she would have no chance of winning!), has decided to call it ‘quits,’” Trump wrote. He added that he would always appreciate Greene for her service to the country.
