Love Is Blind star Ben Mezzenga seemed surprised when Sara Carton said no at the altar, but she revealed that they had actually discussed their answers ahead of time.

“I was shocked about that,” Sara, 29, told People in an interview published on Friday, March 7. “Ultimately, me and Ben talked multiple times before the wedding of discussing, ‘Is this the safest decision for us? Is this the smartest decision for us? We really need to think about that.’ And so we were on the same page, and he knew coming in what I was going to say.”

The oncology nurse also felt like Ben’s response was “disrespectful” and that him asking if they could continue to date was somewhat “inappropriate.”

“And so when he asked that, I wasn’t shocked he wanted to do that or be together still after, but I was shocked he asked that at the altar, knowing the circumstance of we are here to say yes or no,” Sara explained to the outlet. “Also, just with the whole entire concept of you walk away forever, I was like, ‘That’s disrespectful, in a way, of what we signed up for and the whole entire point of why we’re here.’ And so I was shocked he asked that there.”

The season 8 star continued, “Also, me saying no to a marriage, why would I continue dating someone? If you’re going to say no to that, why even continue the relationship? That’s been a theme of mine where I know in the past, my past relationships, I know that this person isn’t my person, but oh, maybe they can change, or maybe there was potential there. I can see us growing together. And I didn’t want to continue the cycle of that.”

Sara confessed that she was “very happy” with how she responded to his request because “[she] didn’t want to give an answer.”

“My mind, it was not in that setting at all. I just needed to process everything that was happening,” she shared.

Fans saw Sara and Ben, 28, connect while they were still in the pods during Love Is Blind season 8, but she was initially wary of the former college baseball player’s lack of knowledge about certain social justice issues. However, when Ben proposed, she happily said yes.

After returning to their apartment in Minneapolis, Sara was sent a TikTok video of a woman who claimed that Ben had treated her poorly in the past. While they seemingly worked through the problem, Sara later revealed that the video actually set off a few warning bells in her head.

“The TikTok was hard. The TikTok is when I was like, ‘I have a lot more I need to get to know about Ben.’ I don’t want that to make it seem like that was my decision-maker because I continued moving forward thinking, ‘We can get past this,’” she told Journalposts on March 7. “But that was big for me. And that was big for my family, for trust and making sure this is a safe person to be with and to get married.”

Plus, Sara also revealed that she was sent other social media posts that began giving her second thoughts about Ben.

“I received that YouTube card [or a picture of it] five days before the wedding,” she told the publication. “It was actually sent to me from a friend in Nashville. I was a travel nurse at the time in Nashville and his friend sent it to him. I was like, ‘This is crazy.’”
