Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Anchorage, Alaska for peace negotiations with President Trump to end the Ukraine War wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with ‘CCCP’, or USSR, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which collapsed in 1991.

The territory of Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 by the United States from the Russian Tsar after a costly loss in the Crimean War.

The choice of Alaska for the Trump-Putin meeting shows a willingness to discuss serious bilateral relations, apart from the EU, which has bogged the U.S. down in the Ukraine war.
