Late-Night Host Johnny Carson Blew the Whistle On Biden 36 Years Ago
Legendary late-night television host Johnny Carson once cast a spotlight on a controversy that would follow then-Senator Joseph Biden for decades. The focus of his monologue? Senator Joseph Biden, a Democratic candidate embroiled in a controversy.
“One of the Democratic candidates is Senator Joseph Biden. Have you seen the problem he’s been having?” Carson began.
“He went around and made a speech. And apparently, he quoted, I think it was a British politician, took his speech and kind of paraphrased it as his own. And then the press got on him. And then he was charged also with taking part of Bobby Kennedy’s speeches.”
Carson then delivered a great punchline. “And Biden says, not to worry, he reassured his staff. He said, ‘we have nothing to fear, but fear itself,’” he quipped, cleverly intertwining the controversy with a famous quote attributed to Franklin D. Roosevelt.
WATCH:
The incident Carson referred to involved Biden’s use of passages from a speech by British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock without adequate attribution, alongside allegations of borrowing from speeches made by Bobby Kennedy.
Though decades old, Carson’s message seems to still resonate today amidst Joe Biden’s presidency.
