Television host Jimmy Kimmel has acknowledged that certain liberal voices within the Democratic Party are “repulsive” and drive voters away from supporting progressive causes.

The comedian shared his views during an appearance on the Sarah Silverman Podcast on Thursday, where he discussed cancel culture and its impact on political discourse.

Silverman raised the topic of podcaster Joe Rogan, who faced significant backlash for endorsing President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Silverman described the situation as “ironic”, noting that Democrats who position themselves as “inclusive” demonstrated “incredibly elitist” behavior toward Rogan’s political choice.

Kimmel found himself defending the party while simultaneously criticizing certain progressive voices.

The ABC host said that the problematic voices do not represent the entire Democratic Party or its majority membership.

“Yes. But it’s not — it’s not the party. It’s not the majority. It’s the loud voices that scare people from saying what they believe and make you think twice about a joke or whatever,” Kimmel explained during the podcast.

He also suggested that while some progressive arguments have merit, the delivery often proves counterproductive to the party’s goals.

“You know, a lot of their points are valid, but a lot of them are also just repulsive, in that they repel people,” Kimmel added.

The comedian went on to elaborate on how these voices impact public perception of the Democratic Party and progressive movement.

“They go like, ‘Oh, you’re no fun. I don’t want to be around you.’ And I think that if you had to boil it down to one thing, that’s kind of what it is,” he stated.

Kimmel also argued that harsh liberal attacks on comedians contributed to Trump’s electoral success.

“I think a lot of the outrage is completely manufactured, and it’s like, a lot of these people who are angry aren’t really angry. I think these liberals who’ve done such a good job of viciously attacking comedians are a big part of the reason why Trump is the president right now,” he said in April, per Post Millennial reporting.

Kimmel made statements on his television show during the COVID-19 pandemic suggesting that unvaccinated patients should receive lower priority for hospital treatment compared to vaccinated individuals.

“Vaccinated people having a heart attack? Yes, come right on in. Unvaccinated guy who gobbled horse goo? Rest in peace, weezy,” Kimmel said, receiving applause from his studio audience.

Kimmel addressed then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s declining approval ratings in 2021 but attributed them to widespread “sexism and racism” among American voters.
