JUST IN: Mike Johnson Gets Brutal News Regarding His Speakership
Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) hold on his gavel faces growing uncertainty as fractures within the House Republican conference threaten his ability to maintain the position. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) delivered a blunt assessment on Tuesday, claiming Johnson lacks the support needed to continue as Speaker, despite a high-profile endorsement from President-elect Donald Trump just a day prior.
In an interview with Fox Business, Roy voiced concerns shared by other House Republicans about the party’s direction and Johnson’s leadership. “I remain undecided, as do a number of my colleagues, because we saw so many of the failures last year that we are concerned about that might limit or inhibit our ability to advance the President’s agenda,” Roy said.
The Texas lawmaker further expressed his doubts about Johnson’s prospects ahead of a critical vote scheduled for Friday. “Right now, I don’t believe that he has the votes, and I think we need to have the conference get-together so that we can get united,” Roy added.
The public split among Republicans has spotlighted ongoing challenges in aligning behind a unified strategy, even as the GOP prepares to work alongside Trump’s incoming administration. Johnson, who ascended to the speakership in October following weeks of intra-party deadlock, has struggled to navigate competing factions within the party.
While Trump’s endorsement on Monday was intended to bolster Johnson’s standing, it appears to have done little to sway some of the party’s more conservative members. “We are the Party of COMMON SENSE, a primary reason that we WON, in a landslide, the magnificent and historic Presidential Election of 2024,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday.
“The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration. Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement.”
Thank you, President Trump! I’m honored and humbled by your support, as always.
Together, we will quickly deliver on your America First agenda and usher in the new golden age of America.
The American people demand and deserve that we waste no time. Let’s get to work! 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/ljGrB08dRh

Johnson finds himself at a crossroads with his leadership in question just days before the speakership vote on January 3. Even with an endorsement from Trump, his position remains precarious as doubts linger among some members of his party. The House Republican Conference, with its slim majority, leaves Johnson with little room for error; he can only afford to lose one GOP vote to reclaim the speakership if all representatives are in attendance. Roy’s hesitance, shared by other undecided Republicans, marks a pivotal hurdle in Johnson’s re-election campaign.
Despite Trump’s backing, some party members, like Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) remain opposed to Johnson’s leadership. The impending vote will serve as a crucial indicator of Johnson’s ability to lead and the Republican Party’s cohesion, with significant repercussions for their legislative agenda and governance in the 119th Congress. As the clock ticks toward Friday’s vote, all eyes are on Johnson’s ability to unify his conference—a task that has eluded several Republican leaders before him.
