“By God’s own hand, he fell perfectly in the trench,” one NYPD source told the New York Post.
Chilling footage obtained by the outlet shows the suspect — who was wearing a black jacket, shirt and mask — pacing back and forth on the platform while the victim appeared to be looking at his phone. The currently unidentified attacker then shoved from the unsuspecting traveler from behind, launching him in front of the train.
Police do not believe that the suspect knew his attacker.
“The subway stopped abruptly, then we waited for 10 minutes, confused,” Violet Paley, who was on the train, told The Post. “Then the conductor said over the intercom that we were going to have to evacuate because there was a man under the train,” Paley said. “We walked off the subway, there were a bunch of cops and paramedics and they climbed down to get him. When they got him out I was shocked to see him blinking his eyes and moving his fingers. He was bloody.”
The suspect, a 23-year-old man, attempted to flee the scene before he was apprehended above ground a few hours later. The attacker — whose name has not been released as he has yet to be charged — reportedly has a lengthy criminal record. Law enforcement told the outlet that he was previously charged for assaulting an NYPD officer in 2019.
Tuesday’s New Years Eve nightmare follows a string of disturbing incidents along the Big Apple’s subway system.
Earlier this month, a sleeping woman was burned alive while riding a city subway line in Brooklyn. Disturbing footage of the incident showed the woman completely engulfed in flames while onlookers opted not to intervene. She did not survive
On Friday, a Guatemalan national was indicted and accused of intentionally setting the woman on fire. Prosecutors have alleged that Sebastian Zapeta fanned the flames with a shirt before watching the woman burn from a platform bench.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the woman’s body severely burned. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Efforts to identify her are ongoing, and authorities have turned to advanced DNA analysis to confirm her identity as reported by The Associated Press. Investigators believe she may have been homeless.
Investigators are further investigating a second burning incident that took place earlier this week.
