Jennifer Lawrence Talks Rehoming Canine Pippi

Jennifer Lawrence opened up about her decision to rehome her dog after becoming a mother during a Q&A for Die My Love on January 7 at 92nd Street Y in New York City.

“She’s alive, she’s with my parents,” Jennifer shared in a video captured by @jpasc24 on Instagram. “She did not like New York. I lived on 1st and 67th just to be near the park for her. After I had a kid, dogs became so scary.”

Lawrence admitted that her perspective on dogs shifted after her son’s experiences. “My son’s going up to it and it’s almost like I don’t recognize dogs right now,” she said. “I just see them as a threat. One of them bit my son and that just made me want to obliterate every dog ever.”

The Silver Linings Playbook actress who adopted Pippi in 2017 still maintains a love for animals, particularly cats. “I have a cat and I feel like they’re so misunderstood,” she explained. “They are a–holes and people who don’t like that about cats are missing that—that’s what is so funny.”

Fans have praised Lawrence’s thoughtful choice to prioritize safety for both her child and her dog. On Reddit, one user wrote, “Seems like a rational decision after her son was bitten by a dog. And the dog lives with her parents so she can see her whenever.”

Another said, “Yes, as heartbreaking as it is, it’s not safe for either the dog, who is stressed out by the kid, or the kid, who is stressed/scared of the dog, to co-exist in that circumstance.”

A third shared their own experience of rehoming a high-energy dog, noting the lasting bond that develops even after the transition. “My sister did this to me when she got a dog she couldn’t handle. She just didn’t have the means or patience to care for a high energy dog that she deliberately adopted. So then she dropped her unruly dog on my doorstep and promised she would come back for him in a few days. I’ve had this dog for 12 years now and he is my baby and my world. She visits all the time, but we all know this is now MY dog and I would die for him,” they wrote.

Lawrence and her husband, Cooke Maroney, welcomed their first child, son Cy, in February 2022, and expanded their family with a second son, Louie in 2025.

Reflecting on parenthood during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, Lawrence said, “Having children changes everything. It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible. Not only do they go into every decision of if I’m working, where I’m working, when I’m working — they’ve taught me … and they’ve opened up the world to me.”

Becoming a mother also reshaped Lawrence’s perspective on her career. Speaking with Good Morning America in June 2023, she admitted she needed to “work” on not being a helicopter mom to her son, while emphasizing the importance of prioritizing time with him.

“I used to think that [I would direct]. Now I’m just tired and it just looks so hard,” she said. “Once you start a family, that’s the greatest thing in the world. I’m just gonna try to take in every second and be present and enjoy it.”

Ahead of the premiere of Die My Love, Lawrence revealed to The New Yorker in October 2025 that, like her character in the film, she struggled with postpartum anxiety after the birth of Louie.

“I just thought every time he was sleeping he was dead,” she shared. “I thought he cried because he didn’t like his life, or me, or his family. I thought I was doing everything wrong, and that I would ruin my children.”
