Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Benjamin Netanyahu was set to undergo a major prostate removal surgery on Sunday, just a week after he was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection.

Netanyahu, 75, was scheduled for surgery at the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, according to a report from the New York Post. The procedure was expected to last about two hours as doctors worked to remove “a benign enlargement of his prostate,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement.

Hospitals officials stated that the public will receive an update on the prime minister’s condition after the procedure, which generally takes a few days to recover from.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant in Tel Aviv, Israel, Oct. 13, 2023. Austin traveled to the country to meet with Israeli leaders face-to-face and underscore the unwavering support of the U.S. for the people of Israel and commitment to ensuring Israel has what it needs to defend itself. The surgery comes as Israel is currently engaged in numerous military conflicts with surrounding adversaries. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen in recent days in retaliation for the militant group’s continuous attacks on shipping and rocket attacks on Israeli territory.

“The Houthi terrorist regime has repeatedly attacked the State of Israel and its citizens, including in UAV and surface-to-surface missile attacks on Israeli territory,” the IDF said in a statement.

“The targets that were struck by the IDF include military infrastructure used by the Houthi terrorist regime for its military activities in both the Sana’a International Airport and the Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib power stations. In addition, the IDF struck military infrastructure in the Al-Hudaydah, Salif, and Ras Kanatib ports on the western coast.”

On the domestic front, Netanyahu is also the subject of an ongoing corruption trial that began in 2020. The prime minister has been accused of trading regulatory favors for positive press coverage in backroom deals with media executives. About 300 people are expected to testify in the trial, half of whom have already done so.

Prior to the surgery, Netanyahu testified in his defense and denied the allegations levied against him.
