Tensions are flaring up once again in the Middle East.

The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels attacked a Greek-owned cargo ship on Sunday.

The Greek-owned ship was attacked by drones and missiles, which ultimately led to the ship sinking early Monday morning.

Yahoo News had more in-depth coverage on the attack:

A Liberian-flagged cargo ship came under fire Monday in the Red Sea, with two security guards on board reportedly hurt and two others missing in an assault that followed Yemen’s Houthi rebels purportedly sinking another vessel in a similar attack.

The assault on the vessel followed the Houthis saying another ship, the Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier Magic Seas, sank Monday after being attacked with drones, missiles, rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire on Sunday, forcing its crew of 22 to abandon the vessel.

The two attacks and a round of Israeli airstrikes early Monday targeting the rebels raised fears of a renewed Houthi campaign against shipping that could again draw in U.S. and Western forces to the area, particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration targeted the rebels in a major airstrike campaign.

The attacks comes at a sensitive moment in the Middle East, as a possible ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war hangs in the balance, and as Iran weighs whether to restart negotiations over its nuclear program following American airstrikes targeting its most sensitive atomic sites during an Israeli war against the Islamic Republic.

The private security firm Ambrey reported the latest attack Monday night in the Red Sea, offering the details on the hurt and missing security guards. It said the vessel had been heading north toward the Suez Canal when it came under fire by men in small boats and by bomb-carrying drones. The security guards on board had opened fire in the attack.

Since 2023, Houthi rebels have attacked over 100 ships in the Red Sea.

JP provided a list of some of their biggest attacks:

Houthi commandos seized the crew and Bahamas-flagged car carrier Galaxy Leader in international waters in November 2023. The militia still holds the 25 crew members.

The Greek-owned vessel Zografia was sailing from Vietnam to Israel with 24 crew on board and was empty of cargo when attacked off the Yemeni port of Saleef in January 2024. The attack caused a large hole below the waterline.

The British-owned Rubymar was struck with multiple missiles in February 2024, becoming the first ship sunk by the Houthis. It sank on March 2 last year.

In March, a Houthi missile attack killed three seafarers on the Greek-owned, Barbados-flagged ship True Confidence, in the first fatalities reported. The attack set the ship ablaze around 50 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen’s port of Aden.

The Greek-owned Tutor coal carrier sank in June 2024, days after it was struck with missiles and an explosive-laden remote-controlled boat by Houthis near the Yemeni port of Hodeidah. One crew member, believed to have been working in the Tutor’s engine room, remains missing. The rest were evacuated by military authorities and repatriated. Salvagers are still trying to retrieve the vessel.

The Greek-registered tanker Sounion, carrying 150,000 metric tons of crude oil, was struck by several missiles and drones and caught fire on Aug. 21 last year, triggering fears of an oil spill that could cause catastrophic environmental damage. It took months for the vessel to be declared safe and the cargo removed.
