Ilhan Omar Blames 'Stupid' Americans for Trump's Success in Seething Meltdown
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) took aim at President Donald Trump and his supporters during an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan on Sunday.
Speaking with Hasan, Omar criticized those she disagrees with, calling millions of Americans “idiots.”
“These people are just idiots. I really, you know, I’m at the point where it’s become really hard to have an intellectual debate with any of these people because the level of stupidity that they are displaying every single day is frankly embarrassing, not just in Congress, but as Americans, and the fact that these people are allowed to say the most ridiculous things tells you that the dumbing of the United States has arrived because how else do we get a Trump presidency again?” she said.
Omar implied that those who voted for Trump contributed to what she called the “dumbing of the United States.”

Last year, Omar drew backlash after she told a crowd she represented the interests of Somalia over the United States.
“Sleep in comfort, knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system… Together we will protect the interests of Somalia,” she said at the time.
Omar’s statements also came amid her party’s deteriorating messaging and electability.
Some party strategists said Omar’s rhetoric alienates voters and erodes support in future elections.
Hasan, who conducted the interview, has been criticized in the past for his defense of controversial figures.
As the Democratic Party’s approval ratings sit at historic lows, high-profile figures like Omar continue to ensure they stay there.
