GOP Rep. Proclaims Push To Deport Ilhan Omar

Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., said Wednesday he is weighing whether to force a House vote to expel Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., a move that would face long odds but underscores growing frustration among Republicans over Omar’s conduct in Congress.

Fine told Axios he is “actively considering” introducing articles of expulsion, even though removing a sitting member requires a two-thirds vote of the House. That threshold would require significant Democratic support, making passage unlikely.

Fine said his comments were prompted in part by a fundraising email from Omar’s campaign suggesting he be expelled for remarks in which he said Muslims should be “destroyed.”

“I won’t send out fundraising emails calling for her expulsion. If I’m going to do that, you will see me bring the piece of paper. And I am actively considering that,” Fine said on Capitol Hill.

He also cited allegations Omar has long denied and what he described as her “general embrace of Muslim terror” as reasons for weighing the move.

“I don’t think she should be a citizen, let alone a member of Congress,” Fine added.

Omar brushed off the threat.

“I don’t think anybody takes that man serious,” she told Axios. “I don’t think he takes himself serious, so nobody should worry about anything he says.”

Omar has repeatedly clashed with Republicans and has previously been the target of unsuccessful disciplinary efforts, including a censure attempt this year. She was removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2023 over her criticism of Israel.

Since entering Congress earlier this year, Fine has built a reputation as one of the chamber’s most outspoken supporters of Israel and a vocal critic of lawmakers he accuses of excusing or minimizing terrorism. His comments on the Israel-Hamas war and on U.S. policy toward the Middle East have drawn sharp reactions from Democrats, particularly Omar, a Somali-American Muslim and one of Israel’s fiercest critics in Congress.

The standoff highlights deepening divisions in the House, where disciplinary tools increasingly double as political statements, even when the outcome is all but predetermined.
