Explosion Rocks Utah State Campus Hours Earlier than TPUSA Occasion

A Turning Point USA stop in Utah was thrown into chaos Tuesday afternoon after police evacuated Utah State University’s Old Main building and carried out a controlled explosion of a suspicious package.

Campus alerts went out just after 3 p.m. telling students and staff to immediately clear Old Main and avoid elevators while officers swept the building. Minutes later, witnesses reported hearing the words “fire in the hole” before a loud blast echoed across the quad. Authorities later confirmed the sound came from a controlled detonation performed by the bomb squad.

No injuries have been reported, but the scene rattled a campus still reeling from the tragic assassination of TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk earlier this month at another Utah university.

The event, part of TPUSA’s “This Is the Turning Point Tour,” was slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature appearances by Sen. Mike Lee, Rep. Andy Biggs, former Congressman Jason Chaffetz, and Gov. Spencer Cox.

“A suspicious device was found near the exterior of Old Main,” Utah State said in a statement. “University and Local law enforcement were dispatched to the scene. A device was located and deemed to be a non-explosive device. Out of an abundance of caution, the bomb squad detonated the suspicious device. Old Main building is now clear and safe. All scheduled events may resume as normal.”

Security has been heightened across TPUSA events since Kirk’s death, which shocked conservatives nationwide and reignited debates over political violence on college campuses.

Police have not released details on what the package contained or whether it posed a live threat. Investigators remain on the scene and say the area will stay cordoned off until they can determine the source and motive behind the incident.

The scare comes amid a wave of bomb threats and hoax calls targeting schools and universities nationwide in recent weeks, underscoring concerns over campus safety at a time of heightened political tension.

This is a developing story…
