Doral, Florida – Emilio Gonzalez is running for Mayor of the City of Miami as a Republican in the non-partisan elections of November this year. He served as City Manager of Miami for current Mayor Francis Suarez, who is term-limited, from 2017 to 2020. At that time he resigned and became a partner in a fixed-income asset manager. Before City Manager, he had served as director of Miami International Airport since 2013, so he has plenty of experience of public administration in Miami.

Emilio was born in Havana 68 years ago and grew up in Tampa. He received a B.A. in international studies from the University of South Florida, and M.A.’s in Latin American studies and strategic studies from Tulane and the Naval War College, respectively. Finally, he earned a Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Miami.

After receiving his officer’s commission from his college ROTC, he served for 26 years in the United States Army, working with the Defense Intelligence Agency, as military attache for Embassies in Mesoamerica, and in Southern Command. He earned the Parachutist Badge and retired with the rank of bird Colonel.

Following the Army, Emilio served in the administration of President Dubya Bush as director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service from 2005 to 2008, and also as director of Western Hemisphere affairs in the National Security Council. He has worked as chief executive of a digital systems company, and managing director of government affairs at the Tew Cardenas law firm in Miami.

Miami City Government

Miami has the potential to become a world city. Since 1959, Miami’s growth has been fueled by waves of refugees from woke progressive socialist government. First it was Cubans and other Latin Americans fleeing their home countries. Then people from Europe and Asia fleeing the same. During the last decade or so, it has been Americans fleeing high taxes, stifling regulations, inflexible labor unions and other woke progressive socialist policies in Blue States like New York, New Jersey, Illinois and such. Miami has an opportunity to step up in the league tables

However, Miami is in danger of squandering this opportunity because of corrupt and incompetent local government. It combines the practices of Tammany Hall with the politics of Latin America. People go into politics not after having built a successful career in the trades, business or professions, when they are ready to provide some public service. Instead, they go into politics in order to make a living or enhance their careers.

The results are counter-productive for good government:
1. Outright corruption, kickbacks and favoritism.
2. Backroom deals and political lawfare.
3. Crumbling infrastructure, especially traffic congestion and uncontrolled flooding.
4. Demoralized public employees.
5. Bloated contracts awarded to the well connected, not the most qualified.
6. Higher taxes, especially property taxes, and fewer public services.
7. Booming budgets and expanding bureaucracy.
8. Excessive regulation, permitting and licensing.
9. Neglect of police protection from transnational gangs and terrorist organizations.
10. Weaponization of government agencies against ordinary citizens and businesses.

Emilio has heard this message from his friends and neighbors, and it spurred him to run for Mayor of the City of Miami. His campaign may be reached at www.emilioformiami.com. This week his campaign held a kickoff party across from Tropical Park. No restaurant withing the Miami city limits would host this event because of fear of retribution from city government.

He has announced that his governing priorities include:
1. Roll back property taxes.
2. Deregulate entrepreneurs and small businesses.
3. Invest in needed infrastructure projects.
4. Increase police presence on the streets.
5. Reduce out-of-control spending.
6. Apply technology to modernize city services.

Emilio’s stated commitment is to build a city government that works for Miami residents first. He promises not to permit cronyism, wasteful spending, or neglect of neighborhood needs. He asserts that his first priority will be the people who live, work and raise families in Miami.
