Common and Jennifer Hudson 'Both Want' to Get Engaged (Excl)
After three years of dating, Common and Jennifer Hudson are ready to make things official, a source exclusively tells Life & Style, who suspects a marriage proposal will take place before too long, most likely later this year. “It’s something they both seem to want,” says the source.
Common, 53, certainly hasn’t been shy about his intentions. The rapper made his feelings for J-Hud, 43, very clear when he gushed about their “beautiful relationship” on The Breakfast Club, confessing, “If I’m going to get married, it’s to her.”
The daytime talk show host evidently feels the same way about her beau. “Jennifer and Common are a great match, the real deal,” the source says. “Everyone’s so happy for them.”
Common and Jennifer were friendly for years before they sparked dating rumors in 2022 when they worked together on the film Breathe.
The pair continued to be seen on several public outings over the years before he seemingly confirmed that they were romantically involved while appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show in January 2024.
During his interview with Jennifer, Common was asked about his relationship status. He laughed before answering that he was dating someone, though did not explicitly say that the person he was seeing was Jennifer. However, many fans were able to catch on to their relationship when he presented her with a large bouquet of flowers and gave her a kiss on the cheek in photos shared by Warner Brothers.
Shortly after Common confirmed their relationship on Jennifer’s talk show, he further opened up about the announcement during an interview on Today with Hoda & Jenna.
“We had a little fun,” Common recalled of the interview. “I felt like, why not just be loving and honest with who I am and who we are. And it felt good, it was fun, we had a good time.”
The Run All Night actor went on to explain that he is a “very private” person when it comes to his personal life and likes to keep “things that are sacred” out of the spotlight, though insisted that they “had a good time” on The Jennifer Hudson Show.
Despite publicly confirming their romance, Jennifer and Common have continued to keep their love life out of the spotlight. In June 2024, she shared rare insight into their relationship when she was asked how they were doing.
Common, Jennifer Hudson
“Everything is wonderful,” she told People at the time. “That’s all you need to know.”
One month later, the couple collaborated professionally when she was featured on the song “A GOD (There Is)” from his album The Auditorium Vol. 1.
“I loved it,” Common told People when asked what it was like to work with his girlfriend. “When I played it to musician friends, they were like, ‘Who is that singing?’ I’m like, ‘That’s Jennifer!’ It doesn’t sound like things you’ve heard from her before. I love that we were able to utilize her gifts in a new space. She brought it, man.”
Common added that he mistook the original singer on the beat track as Aretha Franklin, which inspired him to ask Jennifer to sing on the track.
“I told [Jennifer] who it was and then we was discussing,” he said. “I was like, you know how the light bulb goes off? The light bulb went off. ‘Wait, that song makes me feel like Aretha. Jennifer played Aretha [in 2021’s Respect]. Jennifer, why don’t you sing on this?’ She’s like, ‘Oh man, I would love to sing on it.’ She was vibing to it.”
