Cheney Goes after ‘Pathetic’ McCarthy for Being Willing to Serve 2nd Trump Term

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) blasted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), calling him “sad” and “pathetic” after he said he was willing to serve in a second Trump administration.

Cheney’s attack followed McCarthy’s claim that he would take a role “in the right position” and “if I’m the best person for the job.”

McCarthy announced he would resign at the end of the month.

Cheney was angry with the former Speaker’s remarks.

“I can’t explain it,” she said in an interview with MSNBC.

“It’s pathetic. There’s sort of an element of — it doesn’t really matter what Donald Trump has done to the country, what Donald Trump has done to the Congress, Donald Trump has done to Kevin McCarthy…”

“To him!” host Jen Psaki interjected.

“Yeah, it’s just kind of, you know, going back for more,” Cheney replied.

She continued:

“I think it’s sad, but I also think history’s going to show that Kevin’s unwillingness to do the right thing, and you know, sort of each time that decision came, did real damage.”

Many of Cheney’s criticisms centered around McCarthy’s actions toward Trump surrounding the 2020 election.

McCarthy blamed Trump for the violence during the Jan. 6, 2021, riots, but quickly walked them back and and has since sought to exonerate him.

Last week, Cheney said if Trump wins in 2024, the United States will be under a significant threat.

“Well, I know what conservative means, and I think that the most conservative of all conservative values is fidelity to the Constitution.”

“So there certainly are people today who are caught in this cult of personality, but that’s the opposite of conservative.

“In my view, fundamentally, there is a choice. You can’t be for Donald Trump and for the Constitution. You have to choose.”

“We are facing a situation with respect to the 2024 election where it’s an existential crisis, and we have to ensure that we don’t have a situation where an election that might be thrown into the House of Representatives is overseen by a Republican majority.”
