Catholic Bishop Condemns Abortions: “Every Abortion Takes a Human Life”

Catholic Archbishop Alexander K. Sample of Portland has once again condemned Oregon’s “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day,” calling it a moral tragedy and a profound sign of spiritual blindness in a message revisiting his pastoral teaching on the sanctity of human life.

The archbishop’s statement comes on the anniversary of Gov. Tina Kotek’s proclamation designating March 10 as a day to honor abortionists who kill babies, a move that has drawn repeated criticism from pro-life leaders.

“Rather than celebrating the destruction of innocent human life, our society should be promoting love, protection, and meaningful support for mothers and their children,” Archbishop Sample said.

“Every abortion ends a human life, and no government proclamation can make such an act worthy of praise,” Sample said.

In his original pastoral letter issued last year, Sample expressed deep sorrow over the public celebration and normalization of abortion.

He urged society to instead promote “love, protection, and meaningful support for mothers and their children” rather than celebrating “the destruction of innocent human life.”

Sample’s renewed condemnation emphasizes the Catholic Church’s unwavering stance on protecting life from conception, calling on the faithful to reject the normalization of abortion and to advocate for the dignity of every human being.

Pro-life advocates continue to criticize the governor’s proclamation as an endorsement of practices that end unborn lives, aligning with the archbishop’s view that such observances reflect a cultural drift away from recognizing the inherent value of human life.
