BREAKING: Trump’s Pick For Secretary Of State Has Been Revealed
President-elect Trump has selected Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) to serve as Secretary of State, making the Cuban American lawmaker the first Latino to serve in the prestigious position. Rubio’s selection was first reported by the New York Times after previous reporting named him as a finalist for the role.
Rubio has long warned Americans of the threat posed by China and made the issue a centerpiece of his presidential campaign in 2016. The president-elect has vowed to increase pressure on the Chinese Communist Party through tariffs in order to prevent offshoring and intellectual property theft that has plagued the nation for decades.
Foreign policy has also largely defined Rubio’s career in the Senate. He serves as the vice chairman on the Senate Intelligence Committee and is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

While Rubio and Trump were once rivals during the 2016 campaign cycle — during which insults were traded on both sides — the Florida lawmaker has emerged as one of Trump’s most reliable allies in the Senate in recent years. Rubio was rumored to have been a finalist on Trump’s vice presidential shortlist this past summer, and at one point was seen as the betting favorite.
The senator fiercely opposed both impeachment trials against Trump in his first term and voted to end them at the first opportunity.
Rubio — the son of Cuban exiles — has served as one of Florida’s Senators since 2011. If he accepts the position, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will be tasked with picking a replacement. Potential options include Attorney General Ashley Moody, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds and Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis, among several others.
Earlier in the day, Trump selected another Florida lawmaker, U.S. Rep. Mike Walz, to serve as National Security advisor. The selections follow Lee Zeldin to head up the Environmental Protection Agency, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and former ICE Director Tom Homan for Border Czar.
