BREAKING: Trump vows to ‘make America affordable again’ in Pennsylvania speech
Trump compared Democratic messaging on affordability to “Bonnie and Clyde preaching about public safety.”
President Donald Trump spoke in Pocono, Pennsylvania on Tuesday where he vowed to make “America affordable again.” The president and his administration have been moving to the message of affordability in the US as they’ve been attacked for Democrats over ecnomic concerns.
“I have no higher priority than making America affordable again, that’s what we’re going to do. And again, they cause the high prices, and we’re bringing them down. It’s a simple message,” Trump said.
During the speech, and leading up to it, Trump said that the Democrats were largely to blame for higher prices in America. “They gave you high prices. They gave you the highest inflation in history. And we’re giving you we’re bringing those prices down rapidly. Lower prices, bigger paychecks.”
He compared Democratic messaging on affordability to “Bonnie and Clyde preaching about public safety.”
Trump added that in some states gas prices have been as low as $1.99. “Do you know that’s the equivalent of a very major tax cut. You know, when you know, when you get the energy prices down, it’s really the equivalent, maybe even in many cases, better, than a big tax cut.”
Trump also touted the extension of the Trump tax cuts in the Big Beautiful Bill. “We gave you an extension of the biggest tax cuts and the biggest tax cuts ever, even bigger than the first term. And that’s one of the reasons that your 401k’s are through the roof. It’s one of the reasons that the stock market is at the highest point. So rent prices are down. Dairy prices are coming down very strongly,” Trump said.
He later commented on the price of eggs, and how they have dropped the price “80 percent since March.”
Ahead of the president’s appearance in Pennsylvania, the Trump administration has made a shift in messaging to focus on affordability and the cost of living after focusing on illegal immigration and crime in the US. Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary of the administration, has been tasked with focusing on affordability.
According to a source close to the White House cited by Politico, the stop in Pennsylvania is something of a first stop on a “tour” around the country to discuss the economy. According to the latest available data on inflation, there has been a 3 percent rise in prices from September 2024 to September 2025, far surpassing Biden’s overall year-over-year average of nearly 5 percent.
When discussing the state of the economy leading up to the appearance, Trump graded the economy as an “A-plus-plus-plus-plus-plus,” while speaking to Politico in an interview.
“I inherited a total mess. Prices were at an all-time high when I came in. Prices are coming down substantially,” Trump said in reference to energy price in the US. “Prices are all coming down. It’s been 10 months. It’s amazing what we’ve done. If you think of gasoline a gallon, they had it at $4.50, almost $5.00. You go to some of the states, you had it at $6.00. We hit, uh, three states two days ago, $1.99 a gallon. When that happens, everything comes down.”
Gasoline prices have come down substantially under the Trump administration and fell to $2.90 on average across the country on Sunday, which is the lowest a gallon has been since beginning of the Biden administration in May 2021.
As of September this year, the unemployment rate was around 4.4 percent, which is considered to be full employment in the US.
