U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were forced to open fire when a currently unidentified suspect attempted to run them over during an immigration enforcement operation in Maryland.

The incident occurred around 10:50 AM local time on the 500 block of West Court in Glen Burnie, Maryland, within the Parke West neighborhood of Anne Arundel County. ICE agents with the Enforcement and Removal Operations division were conducting an immigration enforcement detail when they approached a white van.

According to police, the driver of the van attempted to run over the agents, prompting the agents to open fire on the vehicle. The van then accelerated and came to rest in a wooded area behind nearby homes.

Two individuals were injured in the shooting and transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. One person inside the van was struck by gunfire and is in stable condition at the hospital, according to a report from local outlet WBFF.

The second person, who was outside the van, sustained minor injuries from the incident and was also hospitalized. Details on the wounded individuals have not been released as of this report, including whether any law enforcement personnel were among the injured.

Anne Arundel County Police and federal agents responded to the scene, cordoning off a corner of the neighborhood with yellow tape. An Anne Arundel County Police Forensic Service van was observed within the perimeter by the afternoon, WBFF reported.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department is investigating the shooting, with preliminary findings indicating that the agents fired after the van’s attempt to run them over. ICE has not issued an official statement or responded to requests for comment as of this report.

“I am aware of the ICE-involved shooting that occurred earlier today in Glen Burnie. As information surrounding the incident continues to emerge, we will remain in touch with local officials and are standing by to provide support for the community,” Maryland governor Wes Moore said in a statement.

This year has seen at least nine immigration enforcement-related shootings nationwide, including several where agents fired at vehicles attempting to hit them or flee. No further details on the specific target of this operation or related arrests have been released at this time.

The incident comes amid a massive increase in targeted attacks on federal immigration enforcement operations since President Donald Trump returned to the White House this past January. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported a staggering 1,150 percent increase in assaults on ICE agents between January of this year and late November.

DHS also claimed an 8,000% rise in death threats against ICE personnel, citing examples like a social media post threatening officer safety.
