BREAKING: President Trump signs ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ into law
The bill, as amended by the Senate, passed in the House on Thursday with a vote of 218 to 214.
President Donald Trump signed the “One Big Beautiful” bill into law on Independence Day, marking a large legislative victory for his first year back in office.
The signing ceremony was held at the White House, where the president called the bill “the greatest victory yet” and the “single most popular bill ever signed.” He commended lawmakers who got the bill done, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson, who gifted Trump the gavel used to enact the Big Beautiful Bill.
He criticized the Democrats for voting against the bill, saying, “they should have voted for it. They didn’t vote for tax cuts, they didn’t vote for taking care of people. They didn’t vote, not one vote. And we knew that because the hatred of either the country or me or both is so great, they didn’t vote at all, and it’s terrible.”
Ahead of the signing, a B2 bomber and 2 F-35 fighter jets flew over the White House in honor of those who participated in Operation Midnight Hammer in Iran and for those still serving. Members of the mission that saw Iran’s nuclear facilities destroyed attended the military family picnic on the White House lawn.
The package will increase the child tax credit from $2,000 to $2,200, cut tax incentives for electric vehicles and other green energy projects established by the “Inflation Reduction Act” that was made into law under former President Joe Biden, establish no tax on tips and overtime up to $25,000, invests $46.5 billion for more border wall construction, and a number of other Trump-agenda items.
House Republicans were able to pass the Senate’s version of the bill on Thursday in a 218 to 214 vote, with only two GOP House members voting in opposition with the Democrats: Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). Leading up to the final vote, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) took to the floor and spoke for over 8 hours, breaking a record for the longest floor speech by 12 minutes.
House Speaker Mike Johnson then spoke on the floor, saying, “Democrats deliver performances, Republicans deliver results,” and went on to pass the bill through the chamber with the vote.
After the vote, Trump congratulated Johnson on the vote, writing, “Great job by the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, who spearheaded the drive in Congress for the approval of the ‘ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL ACT.’ He has Great Strength and Wisdom, and will go down as one of the most successful Speakers of the House in History, maybe even the BEST OF THEM ALL. Thank you Mike, and congratulations on a job well done!”
