Vice President JD Vance addressed the media from Pakistan after 21 hours of peace talks with Iran in Islamabad. He revealed that an agreement was not reached.

“We have been at now it for 21 hours, and we’ve had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranians. That’s the good news. The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement — and I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America,” Vance said.

“So we go back to the United States having not come to an agreement. We’ve made it very clear what our red lines are, what things we’re willing to to accomodate them on and what things we’re not willing to to accomodate them on, and we’ve made that as clear as we possibly could, and they’ve chosen not to accept our terms.”

Vance also indicated that he was in constant communication with President Trump throughout the negotiations, and that Iran has the USA’s final and best offer. It’s up to Iran to accept it or face their fate.

Vance said the president encouraged him to approach the negotiations in “good faith” and to do his best to get a deal done. “We did that, and unfortunately, we weren’t able to make any headway,” Vance said, in response to a reporter’s question.

Vance said that the US is seeking a clear assurance that Iran will not pursue development of a nuclear weapon. “We haven’t seen that yet. We hope that we will,” he said.

The talks, brokered by Pakistan, marked the highest-level in-person engagement between US and Iranian officials since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

President Trump had previously told reporters it “makes no difference” to him whether an agreement is reached between the two sides. He also said that China would face repercussions if it supports Iran’s military efforts, per CNN.
