Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in 2024.

Former GOP Congressman for New York George Santos has been sentenced to 87 years in federal prison, per the New York Times. This comes after he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in 2024.

Santos was expelled from Congress in 2023 after an ethics investigation found he had spent campaign funds on cosmetics, Botox, designer clothing, OnlyFans, and more, with over 100 Republicans joining Democrats in ousting their fellow party member.

Federal prosecutors had asked for the 87-month sentence, saying that it was needed for Santos to reflect on the “seriousness of his unparalleled crimes” and “to protect the public from being defrauded.” Prosecutors also criticized social media posts from Santos, arguing that they showed he had little remorse for actions and was using his notoriety to make money and build a brand.

“From his creation of a wholly fictitious biography to his callous theft of money from elderly and impaired donors, Santos’s unrestrained greed and voracious appetite for fame enabled him to exploit the very system by which we select our representatives,” prosecutors said in a sentencing memorandum, per NBC News.

Santos’ attorneys urged the judge to hand down a sentence of two years. “His conduct, though involving dishonesty and abuse of trust, stemmed largely from a misguided desperation related to his political campaign, rather than inherent malice,” a court filing from his attorneys said.

“Moreover, the public nature of this case and Mr. Santos’s fall from a position of public trust serve as a stark warning to others who might contemplate similar offenses.”
