“Today, with a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek a fourth term,” Muriel Bowser said.

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) will not be seeking reelection, she announced on Tuesday. With Bowser leaving, it will leave an open field for those who want to run for mayor of the nation’s capital during the next few years with President Donald Trump in the White House.

“It has been the honor of my life to be your mayor. But today, with a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek a fourth term,” Bowser said in a post to X.

In her statement shared online, Bowser said that she had the “immense privilege of working alongside all of you, the residents of DC” as mayor. Bowser then said she and others “laid the groundwork for others to build upon, to reshape and grow DC’s economy, establish DC as the 51st state, and protect our investments in affordable housing, transportation, public safety, and public schools.”

Democrats, including Bowser and others, have been vying to give DC statehood in order to gain a greater number of senators in Congress.

“It has been the honor of my life to be your mayor. When you placed your trust in me ten years ago, you gave me an extraordinary opportunity to have a positive impact on my hometown,” she added in the statement. “Every day since, I’ve cherished that opportunity, and have happily given all of my passion and energy to a job I love. Together, you and I have built a legacy of success of which I am intensely proud. My term will end on January 2, 2027, but until then, let’s run through the tape and keep winning for DC.”
