Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders sent shockwaves throughout the political landscape after he voiced support for Elon Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in their newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Sander’s remarks came after he criticised the Pentagon‘s spending practices.

In a post on X, Sanders expressed agreement with Musk’s stance on government waste.

“Elon Musk is right,” Sanders wrote.

“The Pentagon, with a budget of $886 billion, just failed its 7th audit in a row. It’s lost track of billions.”

Sanders noted that just 13 senators opposed the previous year’s defence budget.

Musk responded to Sanders’ post with two American flag emojis.

The Tesla CEO will lead DOGE alongside Ramaswamy, which aims to address widespread government waste.

Meanwhile, other prominent voices reacted to Sanders’ post:

“Welcome home, Bernie,” Matt Gaetz wrote.

“Glad you realized Elon Musk is not the problem,” Collin Rugg said.

“Based Sanders?” Matt Wallace quipped.

“Has hell frozen over?” asked End Wokeness.

Musk has also been raising concerns about the national debt crisis, warning that interest payments exceed military spending.

“The interest that we owe on our national debt is now higher than the defence budget. Over a trillion dollars and growing. The country is going to go bankrupt,” Musk stated.

Musk warned that “America is going bankrupt fast” as the national debt has now surpassed $36 trillion

“ALL government spending is taxation. This is a very important concept to appreciate. It is either direct taxation, like income tax, or indirect via inflation due to increasing the money supply,” Musk said.

DOGE will operate as an advisory body, working to implement structural reforms and introduce entrepreneurial approaches to government operations.

In a recent Wall Street Journal opinion piece, Musk and Ramaswamy clarified that they will serve as volunteers rather than federal employees.
