It’s a Sex and the City tale as old as time — the relationship between Carrie Bradshaw and Aidan Shaw, which has spanned both the original series and its spinoff, And Just Like That… But where did the romance between the pair stand heading into season 3?

Carrie and Aidan’s Complicated Relationship History

Carrie and Aidan first met in season 3 of Sex and the City amid her bumpy relationship with her eventual husband, Mr. Big. Carrie cheated on Aidan with Big, leading to the sex columnist and furniture designer’s first breakup.

However, Aidan and Carrie couldn’t stay away from each other for too long. They ended up rekindling their romance in season 4, where they moved in together. Aidan ended up proposing to Carrie despite obvious signs she wasn’t interested in marriage with him. Eventually, her hesitation about walking down the aisle and Aidan’s trust issues led them to break up again.

In season 6 of Sex and the City, Carrie bumped into Aidan on the street. He revealed he became a father to three children and married a woman named Kathy. At the end of the series, Carrie ended up with Big after she realized her life in Paris with Aleksandr Petrovsky was anything but magical. Carrie and Big wed in a small courthouse ceremony in the first Sex and the City film.

In the second Sex and the City movie, Carrie ran into Aidan while visiting Abu Dhabi with the girls. They made plans to meet up for dinner and ended up sharing a kiss. Carrie expressed regret over kissing Aidan and later broke the news to Big. The two were able to overcome the hurdle in their marriage.

Are Carrie and Aidan Together on ‘And Just Like That’?

When it comes to the status of Carrie and Aidan’s current relationship, things are rather complicated and their romance is kind of on hold heading into season 3.
After Big’s death in season 1 of And Just Like That… Carrie and Aidan reconnected and went out to dinner. However, he had a weird reaction to finding out that she still lived in her NYC apartment from Sex and the City.

“When you said come back to your place, I thought you had a different place,” he told her. “At the restaurant, I thought, ‘How great. This feels really great.’ We’re back where we started. But this is where we ended with that f–king wall I couldn’t break through and those floors — remember the floors I redid? It’s all bad. It’s all in there.”

Aidan wanted no part in revisiting the past, which included refusing to enter Carrie’s apartment. She ultimately decided to buy a massive place in Gramercy Park where they could spend time together. In the end, Aidan decided that his kids needed him to be present in their lives back in Virgina. He told Carrie that when his youngest son was old enough, he would consider coming back to the city in five years’ time.

They left things kind of open ended, with Aidan pledging his love for Carrie and the pair getting intimate before he headed back to Virginia.

“The only thing that I love more than I love you is my boys. I made a commitment that I won’t lose you again and I won’t. Just gimme some time,” he said in the season 2 finale.

Is Aidan in ‘And Just Like That’ Season 3?

John Corbett, who plays Aidan, is returning for And Just Like That… season 3, photos captured while filming the season revealed. In the trailer for the season, Aidan sent Carrie a blank postcard. Later in the trailer, the writer said “it’s complicated” with Aidan. He is also seen in several clips with Carrie.

And Just Like That… season 3 premieres on May 29, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET on Max.
