Doral, Florida – America is a Judeo-Christian errand into the wilderness, and the wilderness is teeming with barbaric pagans who oppose our errand. That opposition is expressed at all levels, including not only in how we earn and handle our money, but also in how we relate with our family. The main thrust of that opposition, however, is at the political level. The opposition seeks to mobilize the power of government in order to oppose the Christian errand. They do this not only because they worship Caesar (state power) as the head false god in their pantheon, but also because many Christian pastors voluntarily withdraw from this spiritual battlefield.
Pastors withdraw due to a combination of factors:
1. They are comfortable in their prosperity, thinking that the government will threaten their tax exempt status only if they engage in politics. Nevertheless, progressive congregations blatantly engage in partisan politics, and their tax-exempt status is never threatened. Indeed, that tax rule is un Constitutional and must be challenged, like Roe v. Wade. It was adopted at the behest of Senate Majority Leader Johnson (D-TX), and he intended for it to scare the clergy into silence.
2. They are complacent and think that the loss of free Christian worship cannot happen here in America. They have never lived in or studied countries where this has happened, where freedom has been suppressed, including not only the freedom to earn a living and engage in politics, but also the freedom to grow our families and worship God.
3. They are timid and unwilling to disturb the peace in their congregations, even when they do realize the threat. Paul the Apostle, however, wrote to Timothy that God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7.
Those who withdraw are incomplete Christians. Didn’t God himself send his Son to mingle in the muck of human life, to break bread with tax collectors and prostitutes, to participate in our life fully? Real Christians must confront the onslaught of pagan progressive politics on all fronts, including those set forth below. See Eric Metaxas, A Letter to the American Church (2022).
High Taxes
The three synoptic gospels tell the story of when a group of rabbinical students was sent to ask Jesus whether it was lawful, under the law of Moses, to pay taxes to the pagan Roman emperor who had conquered Israel. Jesus replied that we should pay to Caesar what is due to the emperor, and to God what is due to God. Matthew 22:15; Mark 12:13; and Luke 20:21.
This division of loyalties lays the foundation for freedom in Christian civilizations. It creates a private space of freedom for the individual with his Creator, apart from the demands of the collective group and its state representative. It is not found in any other civilization: Not Greco-Roman, Chinese, Hindu or Islamic.
Today in America we see an insatiable appetite by our federal government, and by progressive state governments, to confiscate more of our income and assets via ever higher taxation. Even God only asks for 10%, while in many American jurisdictions the tax rate exceeds 50% of income. The current progressive candidate for President proposes a huge tax increase not only by allowing the expiration of the lower taxes enacted by the prior administration, but also by increasing taxes further on its own initiative.
These proposed tax increases would give America a much higher corporate income tax rate than our international competitor countries, and would tax unrealized gains on capital assets. They would decrease what we will have remaining to pay to God, by supporting our families, investing in trades and businesses, and donating to our churches and other philanthropies.
Inflation
Since our current progessive administration was inaugurated in January 2021, the value of our currency has decreased by around 20%, due to excessive government spending and currency printing. This inflation has undermined the purchasing power of working people, while instead increasing the wealth of owners of capital assets, which cannot be printed by our central bank. As a result, interest rates have about doubled.
The Bible tells us that God loves honest weights and measures. Leviticus 19:35; Deuteronomy 25:13; and Proverbs 11:1, 16:11, and 20:10. Current policies are making the gallon small and the dollar bloated, falsifying their worth by deceit. Amos 8:5.
At the end of the prior administration, the rate of annual inflation was only around 1.4%, while the current administration has produced the highest rates of inflation in some 40 years.
Suppression of Free Speech
Even Elon Musk, no holy-roller himself, has observed that you must have free speech in order to preserve a democratic republic. Free speech is necessary not only for democratic politics, but also for Christian worship. See the consequences in countries that have banned free worship as their citizens see fit. See countries that support an established church, or that prohibit competing denominations. Even worse are totalitarian communist and jihadist countries, which prohibit or harass any Christian worship.
Nevertheless, the progressive leadership behind the current administration have openly proclaimed their opposition to free speech. Instead they support censorship against dissenting voices, which they call dis-information, mis-information and even mal-information.
For example, Hillary Clinton has insisted that if social media platforms “don’t moderate and monitor their content, then we lose total control.” She means control of expression by government technocrats in order to enforce the progressive orthodoxy, without permitting dissent. That is what happened during much of the Covid shutdowns, and it violates the protection provided by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Speaking of the Constitution, however, John Kerry has observed that the First Amendment constitutes a roadblock to imposing an exclusive progressive narrative in the media. In fact, that is exactly the purpose of the First Amendment, and we should preserve it.
Finally, Governor Walz has expressed the view that so-called hate speech and misinformation do not deserve protection by the First Amendment. Such a totalitarian progressive regime would not hesitate to interfere with the proclamation of God’s Word by Christian pastors. These anti-free speech positions are shared by a combine that includes not only big government, but also big business, mainstream media and academia.
Progressive Leadership
Since 2008 at least, progressive leadership of the current administration has held not only globalist, but also communist and jihadist views. In Washington they say that people are policy, and those are the ideological positions of the people in leadership.
The current progressive candidate for President claims that her policies represent “A New Way Forward,” but they are the same as the policies of Roman Emperor Diocletian around A.D. 300: (1) higher taxes; (2) currency debasement; and (3) suppression of free speech. That emperor was also a great persecutor of Christians.
God’s errand for Christians includes that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven, and that we make disciples of all nations. Matthew 6:9 and 28:19; Mark 16:15. He is both an imperialist and a colonizer. He bids us to embark on the errand of settler colonialism.
The least that Christians should do is vote on Tuesday, November 5, or better yet vote in person during the two weeks of early voting, and vote your conscience.
