Officials at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina, declared a Site Area Emergency following a fire at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL).

“An event is in progress that has triggered emergency response activities at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site,” the Savannah River Site Emergency Response Organization announced in a press release. “At this time, there is no indication of a consequence beyond the Savannah River Site boundaries,” the release added.

Additional details were provided in a follow-up release at 7:30 p.m. local time. “Savannah River Site (SRS) officials have declared a Site Area Emergency at 5:39 p.m. on 10-28-26 at the Site located near Aiken, SC. A fire was reported at the Savannah River National Laboratory but has since been extinguished. No contamination has been reported outside the affected facility,” officials said.

“As a precaution, barricades at site entrances have been closed to incoming traffic. Rail, river, and air traffic in the vicinity of SRS is also being restricted. SRS officials are directing response efforts and have notified the appropriate state and local government agencies.”

Local residents were advised to stay tuned to local news and radio stations for additional updates. Employees not involved in emergency response or shutdown operations were sheltered as a precaution in affected areas.

Local reporting from WRDW cited SRS information indicating the fire occurred in a single room and involved “an unfiltered ground-level radiological release.” The same reports stated there was no indication of contamination beyond the site’s boundaries and that the incident did not pose a danger to the public outside the SRS perimeter.

Employees in the laboratory’s Area A sheltered in place behind barricades for approximately 30 minutes before some were allowed to leave, while entry by others was restricted. No injuries were reported in available accounts, and the cause of the fire remained unknown as of the latest updates.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division stated that it and members of the State Emergency Response Team were coordinating with the Savannah River Site to support if needed. In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary flight restriction in connection with the event, describing it as a U.S. government “nuclear incident.”

The Savannah River Site is a Department of Energy complex spanning roughly 310 square miles across Aiken, Barnwell, and Allendale counties. It has historically supported nuclear materials production and currently focuses on environmental management, national security missions, and research at the Savannah River National Laboratory, one of 17 DOE national laboratories.

The situation has been described as developing, with specifics on the quantity or nature of any released material not detailed in initial official statements.
