Just weeks before midterms, the Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts is suspending his campaign.

Shawn Oliver was arrested on Saturday night after allegedly driving under the influence and smashing his SUV into five other vehicles.

Thankfully, nobody was injured.

But, footage from the crash site is dramatic.

Take a look:

Here’s a closer view of Oliver’s car, completely demolished and laying on its back:

Shawn Oliver was arrested and taken into custody on Sunday morning following his release from the hospital.

Two hours later, he was released from jail after posting bail.

CBS News detailed the events:

It happened around 11:40 p.m. on Dartmouth Street in New Bedford.

Police said Oliver’s SUV flipped over and slammed into multiple parked cars. In total, five cars were involved and two were heavily damaged.

Oliver was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment. Police said that after an investigation at the scene of the crash and the hospital, Oliver was arrested.

He is charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation and speeding.

Oliver, who represents Ward 3 on the New Bedford City Council, was running for lieutenant governor on the Republican ticket with Mike Minogue.

In a statement, Republican candidate for Massachusetts Governor Mike Minogue expressed disappointed and said that he asked his running mate to suspend his campaign.

Read his full statement here:

I am extremely disappointed. Shawn is lucky to be alive and lucky that no one innocent was hurt. There is no excuse for driving under the influence.

After speaking with Shawn, I am asking him to suspend his campaign immediately, and when elected, I will formally ask for his resignation. Shawn is a father and grandfather, and he needs to put his family first. He needs to do the work to ensure this never happens again. If he needs help with that, I will help him.

As governor, I will put the Commonwealth first. That starts with accountability, something Massachusetts has not seen from Maura Healey.

Hours later, Shawn Oliver did as he was asked and announced that he was dropping out of the race.

The New York Post shared his statement:

Oliver said in a statement released just after 2:15 p.m. Sunday, “After careful reflection, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Lieutenant Governor.

“This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”

His statement came less than three hours after Minogue announced that he had urged his running mate to step down.

This is a major shakeup in Massachusetts, with midterm elections right around the corner on November 3rd.

Current polls have Mike Minogue trailing behind incumbent Democrat Maura Healey by around 19 points.

The Hill noted:

The incident comes more than two weeks before Massachusetts voters head to the polls to vote. The Hill’s election partner Decision Desk HQ projects a safe win for Healey, with a 99 percent probability that she will defeat Minogue.
