Abortion Kills 35-Year-Old Woman in India
A 35-year-old woman died after an illegal abortion performed following a sex-determination test that confirmed she was carrying a female baby, police said.
Malkapuram Sravani, a native of Kannayipalli village in Raghunathpalli mandal who lived with her husband in Peerzadiguda in Hyderabad, was pregnant with her third child. She and her husband, Ambala Bhaskar Goud, an auto driver, already had two daughters.

During the pregnancy, Sravani stayed at her maternal grandmother’s house in Kolukonda village of Devaruppula mandal.The family feared that the birth of another girl would worsen their financial condition.
On July 20, Sravani underwent an illegal prenatal sex determination test at a private scanning facility in Hanumakonda operated by a man identified as Praveen. The test revealed a female baby.
The family decided to have the sex-selection abortion.
A local registered medical practitioner, Shravan (also identified as R Shravan Kumar) from Kolukonda, arranged for an auxiliary nurse midwife, Anasuya, to do the abortion. The abortion took place on July 21 at Anasuya’s residence in Sanjay Nagar, Jangaon, after payment was accepted.
Sravani’s mother, Shobha, helped initiate and facilitate the process.
On July 23, Sravani developed severe bleeding. Anasuya gave her tablets, but her condition did not improve. She was taken to a private hospital in Hanumakonda on July 24, referred to another private hospital in Uppal as her health worsened, and later shifted to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad.
She died there on the morning of July 25 while undergoing treatment from complications of the abortion.
Sravani’s husband lodged a complaint with Jangaon police. Authorities booked four people — Shobha, the RMP Shravan, the ANM Anasuya, and scanning center operator Praveen — under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections related to the illegal prenatal sex determination test and the abortion that caused Sravani’s death.
Police arrested the RMP; the others remain absconding.
Jangaon town inspector P. Satyanarayana Reddy said: “Efforts are on to trace the absconding accused and further investigation is under way.”
