Pro-life advocates gathered at the Iowa State Capitol on Saturday for the fourth annual Iowa March for Life, organized by the Coalition of Pro-Life Leaders in partnership with Pulse Life Advocates.

The event included pro-life educational booths and music at noon, followed by a rally and march until 2 p.m. Many local churches held prayer services before and after.

The rally featured state leaders, including Republican gubernatorial nominee Zach Lahn, who attended with his family.

Attorney General Brenna Bird praised the passage of House File 2788, a law that prohibits receiving abortion medications like mifepristone through telehealth visits or mail-order prescription services.

“I’m so glad that as a mom, as a prosecutor and as attorney general, I can work, uphold the right to protect innocent human life, to protect the unborn. And just this session, our legislators passed a law protecting women from the dangers of black, black market mail-order abortion pills,” Bird said.

This comes four years after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In Iowa, abortion is illegal after a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically around six weeks of pregnancy.

After the speeches, advocates marched around the Capitol and Iowa Supreme Court building, holding signs that read “love life – choose life.”

Participants shared their thoughts on the importance of the gathering.

Dominica Bean said, “I think it’s really beautiful that so many people came together to march for the same cause, which is for life. From the moment of conception until natural death. I think it’s just really important that we show people how much we love life. It was also just really beautiful just to see, like, different religions come together.”

Pastor James Brown of Eagle Vision Church added, “The biggest highlight is the people that are in action and exercising their First Amendment rights to stand up and express themselves, that all life is worthwhile, all life has value. The thing that first inspired me about life in John 3.16, that the lord said that he came and we might have everlasting life.”

Wil Russell, board member for Iowa Right to Life, said, “I went to a camp that helped me understand more of what it meant to be pro-life. Ever since then, I’ve wanted to get involved and to know more and to be able to have an impact to help people, especially the younger generation, to understand what it means to be pro-life and how we can change the culture.”

Officials with the Coalition of Pro-Life Leaders said the organization and coalition will continue to engage through grassroots activities, public awareness and educational programs, along with supporting political efforts to protect all life in the state.

The march highlighted the pro-life movement’s commitment to proclaiming the value of all human life and advocating for its protection in law.
