Is the Message of ‘Hate the Wealthy’ Getting Louder? New Ballot Exhibits The place People Suppose the Actual Divide Is
When Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders came on the national scene, he unabashedly described himself as a Democratic Socialist. On some level, you had to admire his honesty; he wasn’t trying to hide who he was — the scary part was that he wasn’t trying to hide who he was. At the time, it was a shock to many. In 2026, Bernie Sanders now finds himself one among many. While many Americans, when asked, might say we are divided by race or gender, a new poll says the real divide is something different. Is Bernie’s class envy resonating with more people?
Hard to believe how much the Democrats want to adopt Socialism. But here we are, fighting it at every turn. The elites want the rich, richer and the middle class wiped out. It never ends well. pic.twitter.com/zF9lJlTdSm

According to a new NBC News poll, the good news is that, weeks away from America’s 250th birthday, most Americans are feeling that we are more united than divided, especially along traditional lines of race and gender. While 54 percent of those polled said they believe that most Americans share the same core values, 44 percent said they think most Americans have inherently different values.

While the traditional divides are still there, another one is emerging: the wealthy versus the non-wealthy. Granted, class envy is certainly nothing new, and the opinions of it are all over the map. A 30-year-old man who said he is a Democrat said, “We live in completely different worlds.” A 47-year-old woman who said she is an independent stated that the rich “don’t have empathy right now because they’re not suffering how other people are suffering.”
But here is where the answers get a bit interesting. A 56-year-old man who claimed he was a Republican said, “There is a huge divide. But you know, everybody’s still Americans. We all have the same rights. We all have the same opportunities.” A 36-year-old man was brutally honest but saw commonalities between haves and have-nots, saying:
“I’m far from wealthy, but there’s no difference between me and the guy that owns the company that I work for. I have the same work ethic; he just had better opportunities, and he took them. When I had those opportunities, I didn’t take them.”
Don’t worry about Elon becoming rich with his own money.
Worry about politicians becoming rich with your money.

The poll asked respondents about wealth and power. Of those polled, 82 percent said that “ordinary Americans,” regardless of politics, had more in common with one another than with those they see as having a lot of power. Respondents also said they believe there is a two-tier justice system, with 86 percent saying wealthy people can often pay their way out of consequences. When asked about how to fix the divide, the answers were about what you might expect. The 30-year-old Democrat said, “Tax people, billionaires at the very least.” One Republican suggested fixing the public education system, and another Republican stated, “You just can’t expect the government to fix that.”

So, is all of this evidence that the constant drumbeat of “hate the rich” from the usual suspects like Bernie Sanders and AOC, plus some new ones like Maine Democrat Senate candidate Graham Platner, is getting louder and being heard? At a time when many Americans are struggling economically, Platner recently threw gas on the fire with his ridiculous tweet about Elon Musk, posting on X, “Elon Musk just became the world’s first trillionaire. Let’s make sure he’s also the last.” Combine that with the number of Democratic Socialists being nominated and elected by the Democratic Party, who will echo Platner’s and others’ “hate the rich” cries, and the answer sure looks like it’s a yes.
It’s a message that more Americans are paying attention to, and Republicans would do well to pay attention before November to those Americans.
Low income people don’t automatically feel entitled to someone else’s money. Only the jealous, entitled ones do. Just let people keep more of their own money.
