With the promised revelation of long held government information about “flying saucers,” known as “UFOs,” encounters with “extraterrestrials” and other phenomena which one associates with Star Trek, Star Wars, Lost in Space, and 1950s sci-fi movies, there seems to be a general conversation around the nation about just what we will be told. That is, of course, much different from what we must or must not believe. However, the Orthodox Christian Church has already addressed this issue, especially in the book ORTHODOXY AND THE RELIGION OF THE FUTURE written by Fr. Seraphim Rose in 1975 and updated in 1979. No matter what is presented to the nation and the world in the near future, those of the Orthodox view will surely not be swayed.

In a nutshell, any “UFO encounters” are not believed to be “extraterrestrial” rather spiritual. In an age in which demonic deception is perceived as rampant, such phenomena are deemed to be concrete evidence of a fallen age. Demons, the Church teaches and Rose affirms, can appear in physical or semi-physical form but are not to be attributed to some other worldly creations or more “evolved” than humanity which has been created by the Almighty, the Triune God of Christendom and Y-H-V-H of Judaism.

Christians are admonished not to be afraid, but to remain sober and grounded in Scripture. “Other intelligences” in Orthodox Christian teachings are angels and demons, not “other worldly” creatures. How does one protect oneself? Not with a Star Trek-like maneuver, rather with prayer, faith, and a lack of fear.

Father Seraphim Rose was born Eugene Dennis Rose and was a hieromonk in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR). His skeptical views were not limited to UFOS and so-called “extraterrestrial” matters but included criticism of Yoga, Zen, Tantra, Transcendental Meditation, Hare Krishna, and the Charismatic Movement. Why? Simply put, the former are “self-centered” whereas Christian faith is “Christ-centered.” When humans put ourselves in the center of our “universes” the opening is present for the anti-Christ to exert influence and lead people astray.

Father Seraphim passed in 1982, in Orthodoxy often described as “falling asleep in the Lord.” The Council of Bishops of the ROCOR has voted May 2026 to canonize him.

More information about his canonization can be found here.
