Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday made a shocking accusation against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while campaigning in support of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Budapest.

Vance was speaking in reference to March 5 comments made by the Ukrainian leader in response to Hungary’s blockage of a proposed €90 billion EU loan package intended for Ukraine. Zelensky expressed hope that the holdup by “one person” in the EU would end so that Ukrainian soldiers could receive needed weapons.

He added that, otherwise, “we will simply give the address of that person to our Armed Forces. Our guys can call him and speak to him in their own language.” The statement was widely interpreted as referring to Orban, given Hungary’s role in the blockage.

As part of his ongoing trip to Budapest, Vance referenced Zelensky’s comments during a speaking event on Wednesday. “So, first of all, I wasn’t even aware that Zelensky had said that he was going to send private soldiers to the prime minister’s residence until yesterday. Viktor actually told me that, and I then looked it up, almost couldn’t believe it’s true, but it’s true,” he said, calling it “completely scandalous.”

Vance described the remarks as preposterous and highlighted them in the context of broader concerns about foreign influence on Hungary’s internal affairs, including energy disputes such as alleged pipeline issues affecting Hungarian supplies

Relations between Zelensky and Orban have been strained since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Orban’s government has adopted positions that differ from those of most other EU and NATO members. Hungary has repeatedly delayed or vetoed EU decisions on military aid packages to Ukraine, opposed certain economic sanctions against Russia, and maintained bilateral energy agreements with Moscow, including through Russian-controlled pipelines.

In addition, Orban has publicly called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations rather than continued military support for Ukraine

Zelensky and other continental allies have repeatedly condemned Orban’s government as insufficiently supportive of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and defensive needs. Ukrainian officials of have also accused Hungary of prioritizing its own economic interests over collective European security goals.

These differences have led to periodic diplomatic friction, including public statements and blocked initiatives at the EU level.

Vqnce’s visit comes as Orban is locked in one of the most contentious election battles of his lengthy political career. His Fidesz party trails the opposition Tisza Party, led by Péter Magyar — a former political insider — in most polls by margins of around 8 to 12 percentage points among decided voters.

While Hungary’s electoral framework provides structural advantages to the incumbent, the race is viewed as one of the tightest in recent years, with implications for the country’s future policies toward the EU and the Ukraine conflict.
