The Democratic Party has a young men problem. After getting shellacked in 2024, the party’s 2028 hopefuls have apparently settled on a strategy: radical vulnerability.

Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro, California’s Gavin Newsom, and Illinois’s JB Pritzker are all leaning hard into childhood trauma as they quietly gear up for 2028. Shapiro writes about growing up managing a chaotic home. Newsom recalls his mother telling him…”it’s okay to be average”…words he describes as the cruelest he ever heard. Pritzker lost his father at 7 and his mother to alcoholism at 17.

Dems eyeing White House lean into their childhood traumas

There’s something revealing about this strategy. The Democratic pitch to young men isn’t about what young men actually need opportunity, competition, or self-reliance… They’re taking a different via shared wounds, group therapy, and feminization of what could be masculine feelings. It’s a motherly approach: tell me your pain, and I’ll validate it.

But the young men they’re trying to win back aren’t looking for a shoulder to cry on. They’re looking for someone to tell them to stand up straight, get to work, and build something. No amount of memoir writing is going to fake it.
