Zach Galifianakis Is Rising One thing New on Netflix

Zach Galifianakis has spent the better part of two decades proving that he can wring comedy gold out of the most unlikely setups.

An awkward public access-style talk show filmed between two potted plants? Iconic. A blockbuster trilogy built on a blackout weekend in Las Vegas? Legendary. And now? He’s betting he can do it again — with gardening.

Yes, gardening. And honestly, it’s the most Galifianakis move imaginable.

The 56-year-old comedian is returning to Netflix with This Is a Gardening Show, a new six-episode series that is exactly what its beautifully deadpan title promises.

The show will debut on the streaming platform on April 22, which happens to be Earth Day — a detail that lands somewhere between earnest and perfectly tongue-in-cheek..

The First Look Is Here, and It’s Pure Galifianakis

Fans got their first look at the official trailer on March 18, when Netflix released it on YouTube.

And if the logline is anything to go by, the show sounds like it occupies that sweet spot Galifianakis has always thrived in: the intersection of genuine sincerity and absolute absurdity.

In the trailer’s description, Netflix described the show as a “refreshing and whimsical take on gardening.” But the real selling point is the framing. This isn’t Galifianakis pretending to be a master horticulturist — it’s Galifianakis openly admitting he has no idea what he’s doing and dragging you along for the ride.

“Rather than positioning himself as an expert, Galifianakis approaches the subject with curiosity and self-effacing humor, admitting that his goal is to learn alongside the audience,” the logline reads.

“The series blends lighthearted comedy with a sincere appreciation for humans and nature. Ultimately, This Is a Gardening Show is about the joy of connecting with the earth and people,” Netflix added.

That description — comedy laced with genuine warmth — is basically the Galifianakis brand distilled into a single paragraph. The guy has always had that rare ability to make you laugh and then, moments later, catch you off guard with something unexpectedly heartfelt.

The Creative Team Has Serious Credentials

The creative team behind This Is a Gardening Show is stacked with experienced producers who know how to bring offbeat concepts to life.

The series is directed by Brook Linder, produced by Chris Kim, and executive produced by Frank Scherma and Jon Kamen. Galifianakis himself serves as both host and executive producer, which means this isn’t just a gig — it’s a passion project he has a real creative stake in.

The series is produced by RadicalMedia in association with Galifianakis’ own Billios Productions.

And the people working closest with him seem genuinely delighted by the result.

“Zach brings an infectious warmth and humor that makes the world of gardening accessible and delightful for all ages,” said Kim, per Variety. “He can leave you in stitches one moment and, in the next breath, have you genuinely convinced that horse manure is the chocolate soufflé of the gardening world and before you know it, you’re googling the nearest stable.”

Linder offered a glimpse into what filming was actually like, and the picture he paints is both hilarious and oddly endearing.

“He is genuinely interested in how to grow stuff. Making this show often felt like Zach’s excuse to talk to other gardeners,” Linder said. “I kinda think his garden was struggling and he needed help he couldn’t get by walking up to these people in their backyard. You will see a grown man honestly gasp when shown the proper way to plant a seed. This is peak TV.”

Zach Galifianakis’ Comedic Return to Netflix

It’s impossible to talk about Galifianakis and Netflix without talking about Between Two Ferns, the awkward celebrity interview series that became a cultural phenomenon.

The series ran from 2008-2018, spawning countless viral moments and cementing Galifianakis as one of the sharpest improvisational minds in comedy.

The new show comes more than six years after Netflix released Between Two Ferns: The Movie, a mockumentary film based on Galifianakis’ popular talk show. The movie was released in 2019.

The evolution from Between Two Ferns to This Is a Gardening Show feels like a natural, if hilariously literal, progression.

This Is a Gardening Show premieres April 22 on Netflix with six 15-20 minute episodes, a proven comedic host who doubles as an executive producer, and a creative team that clearly had a blast making it.
