The Super Bowl spotlight tends to illuminate everything in a quarterback’s life, and for Seattle Seahawks signal-caller Sam Darnold, that includes a relationship that’s been quietly building for years. After leading his team to victory in Super Bowl 60 on Sunday, Feb. 8, Darnold has another major milestone ahead: a wedding to Katie Hoofnagle, his fiancée and fellow former athlete who he credits with keeping him grounded through the chaos of professional football.
Their story offers a window into how elite athletes navigate relationships amid constant relocation, intense pressure, and public scrutiny. For anyone curious about the personal lives that unfold behind championship moments, this partnership reveals something worth paying attention to.
She’s An Athlete, Too
The couple hard-launched their relationship in June 2023, choosing to keep most details private in the years since. That discretion lifted briefly in July 2025 when they revealed their engagement through an Instagram post that set social media buzzing.
What makes their dynamic work? Darnold pointed to shared experience.
“The support [from] my girlfriend is unbelievable,” Darnold told Journalposts in 2025. “You know, the fact that she just understands it. She’s a former athlete herself, and just gets kind of the grind of everything. When I just want to chill, she’s very up for that, especially during the season.”
That athletic background isn’t incidental. Hoofnagle played varsity soccer at Monte Vista High School in the Bay Area, where she served as team captain, according to posts from her Instagram account. She continued playing at the University of South Carolina, maintaining her connection to competitive sports through college.
Where She’s From
Super Bowl 60 represented something of a homecoming for Hoofnagle. She grew up around San Francisco, California, attending Monte Vista High School before heading east for college.
In a 2021 LinkedIn post, she reflected on leaving her hometown after graduation: “[T]he safe post-grad decision in a world full of uncertainty would have been to move home and take advantage of the professional growth opportunities present in The Bay.”
But she chose differently.

“However, I knew for me, going home to CA wasn’t going to provide me the personal growth that I needed,” she wrote. “At the end of the day, there’s more to life than just my career and I knew I needed to dig my roots somewhere new.”
That decision led her to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she moved after graduating from the University of South Carolina in 2020 with a marketing degree. She began working for a loan management company there, often posting photos from Bank of America Stadium.
The geographic timeline raises intriguing questions about when their paths first crossed. Darnold played for the Carolina Panthers from 2021 to 2022, overlapping with Hoofnagle’s time in Charlotte. He later played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2023—her hometown team. Whether they met in North Carolina or California remains part of their private story.
Balancing ambition with partnership
Hoofnagle has built her own career path independent of Darnold’s football trajectory. Her LinkedIn shows she now works at Renvio, a health technology company, while living in the Seattle area with her fiancé.
That professional identity matters. She’s not simply defined by her relationship to a professional athlete but maintains her own trajectory in marketing and health tech. The couple appears to have found a rhythm that accommodates both careers.
Darnold described how she pushes him to stay engaged with life beyond football. “If she wants to go somewhere and I just want to chill, she’s like, ‘Let’s go out to dinner. We need to go to dinner,’” he told Journalposts.
Long distance and the challenges they’ve navigated
Professional football demands constant adaptation. Players get traded, cut, signed to new teams. Families and partners either adapt or the relationships don’t survive.
Darnold acknowledged this reality during a pre-Super Bowl LX press conference, sharing that the couple “did long distance” for some time over the last few years.
“There was some tough times with trying to figure out, you know, just a lot of things…we’ve been through a lot together in the last few years, and I think I’ll think of her [on the field],” he told reporters.
What keeps him centered
Addressing reporters on Super Bowl 60 opening night Feb. 2, Darnold was asked about how he maintains his peace during the season. His answer centered on his relationship.
“I think it comes back to, for me, having a great fiancée. She does a lot for me, and she keeps me calm,” Darnold said. “She reminds me of why I do what I do, why I go to work every single day.”
The engagement and what’s next
Hoofnagle shared a series of photos from their engagement to Instagram in July 2025.
“YES!!!!!” she captioned the original post.
A few days later, she posted more pictures to celebrate the occasion. These pictures were from an engagement photoshoot on a beach in Dana Point, California.
“a couple more from the best day ever🕊️ here’s to forever together,” she wrote.
The Dana Point setting—a coastal California location—ties back to Hoofnagle’s Bay Area roots while marking a new chapter for the couple.
