DHS Investigating Whether or not Minneapolis Protester’s Gun Fired Earlier than Agent Shot Him
As the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues probing Saturday’s shooting of a pro-illegal-alien protester in Minneapolis, President Donald Trump announced that far-left Democratic Governor Tim Walz called the president and was happy about his dispatching border czar Tom Homan to the out-of-control city.
Deceased protester Alex Pretti’s handgun, DHS believes, might have discharged accidentally when a Border Patrol agent disarmed him. That discharge might have caused other agents to believe shooting had started and kill Pretti in self-defense.
The agents’ body-camera footage should settle the question.
Accidental Discharge
In two reports, the New York Post offered details about the Sig Sauer P320, a 9mm pistol with a history of misfires that led to lawsuits against the company. In the first report, the Post noted that
Pretti was carrying a popular handgun that has a history of unintentionally firing — leading some gun experts to suggest that the gun might have accidentally discharged after a Border Patrol agent grabbed it from him, causing another agent to open fire, killing him Saturday.
Pretti, 37, an ICU nurse angry at President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration in Minnesota, was carrying a loaded Sig Sauer P320 9mm pistol when he allegedly tried to stop federal agents from arresting a woman on the street.
Cops said he had a legal concealed-carry permit for the gun.
Video of the shooting shows a border agent disarming Pretti, shouting “gun!” then walking away. Another agent shot Pretti.
A lawyer with the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, Rob Doar, explained on X his belief that the agent who seized the weapon inadvertently fired it, writing over video of the shooting:
After analyzing the videos, I believe it’s highly likely the first shot was a negligent discharge from the agent in the grey jacket after he removed the Sig P320 from Pretti’s holster while exiting the scene.
“The P320 model is widely carried by armed civilians and US law enforcement, including ICE — but has been the subject of more than 100 allegations that it has a defect that allows it to fire ‘uncommanded,’” the Post continued:
Authorities shared a picture of Pretti’s loaded handgun in the wake of Saturday’s shooting, showing a fully loaded magazine.
The weapon appears to be a high-end custom variant, a P320 AXG Combat, which comes with three 21-round magazines. The gun retails for $1,100 to $1,300.
So now, the newspaper continued in a separate article, DHS wants to know whether the weapon fired accidentally.
“As a result of the accidental discharge, which happened while the gun was in a Border agent’s hand, other officers may have believed their lives were in danger — resulting in the split-second decision to open fire on Pretti, killing him, multiple sources familiar with the investigation said,” the Post reported:
The explanation is a shift from initial claims by DHS officials, who at first said Pretti was brandishing the Sig Sauer P320 pistol, which he was legally allowed to carry.
“It was 100% an accidental discharge by the agent that relieved that person of their weapon. Because everyone’s guns were out, they think that there’s a shooting,” one source said.
Additional sources confirmed that this is the explanation for the shooting that DHS is investigating.
The question is whether the agent inadvertently fired the gun, or whether it discharged because of a defect.
Sig Sauer denies the model has serious defects that cause it to fire without pulling the trigger. Juries have disagreed. In November 2024, a jury ordered the company to pay a man $11 million because his holstered P320 fired when he was walking down steps. The bullet hit his leg and caused permanent damage. In June 2024, a jury awarded another man $2.3 million because a P320 shot him in the leg when he unholstered it.
Trump: Walz Called; Homan to Minneapolis
This morning, Trump ordered Homan to the protester-besieged city.
“He has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He also took a shot at Minnesota’s far-left Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar:
Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me. Separately, a major investigation is going on with respect to the massive 20 Billion Dollar, Plus, Welfare Fraud that has taken place in Minnesota, and is at least partially responsible for the violent organized protests going on in the streets. Additionally, the DOJ and Congress are looking at “Congresswoman” Illhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars.

Hours later, Trump wrote about his conversation with Walz.
The outgoing governor “called me with the request to work together with respect to Minnesota,” Trump wrote. He said it was a “very good call” that suggested the two were “on a similar wavelength.”
Trump told Walz “that what we are looking for are any and all Criminals that they have in their possession,” the post continued:
The Governor, very respectfully, understood that, and I will be speaking to him in the near future. He was happy that Tom Homan was going to Minnesota, and so am I!
As for the shooting, DHS officials are reviewing agents’ body-camera footage, NBC News reported.
Pretti is the second U.S. citizen shot and killed during immigration enforcement. The first was Renee Good, who nearly killed an ICE agent when she refused repeated orders to exit her SUV, then accelerated and hit the agent, who shot her.
A week later, an ICE agent shot an illegal alien in self defense. The illegal and two others — all unlawfully released at the border by the Biden administration — attacked him with a shovel and broom handle.
