The National Council of Resistance in Iran (NCRI), the political unit of the MEK, held its annual event in the United States last Saturday in Washington, D.C. The event was well-attended with the ballroom at the D.C. Hyatt filled to capacity.
Hosted by the U.S. Representative Office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the flagship session, titled “The Path to a Democratic Republic in Iran,” brought together senior American and European political figures alongside leaders of the Iranian resistance movement.
The message of the event was that Iranian society was ripe for change. There were multiple panels and speakers to bring home this message.
Starting off with a description of the continuing persecution of anyone associated with the MEK in Iran, the discussion moved on to the reality of an environmental disaster domestically due to mismanagement and the environmentally abusive business practices of the elites. Combined with censorship and economic collapse, the panelists told a story of a nation on the verge of an explosion of freedom.
What struck me was the focused involvement of the Iranian youth highlighted on the stage. They told stories of joining the MEK and how the political opposition to the mullahs is now in a permanent state of defiance.
“The opposition is now younger, more educated, and desire a democratic, secular republic,” said one of the youth presenters.
It is worth noting that several of the younger speakers were Christian.

The second panel discussed the continuing role of women in Iran, and in the leadership of the resistance movement.
“Wearing the hijab should be the woman’s choice,” was the message.
“Women are not asking for permission, they are claiming their rights as full equal self-determining citizens; we will march to revolution with or without the hijab.”
The event closed with a focus on the resistance units in-country fighting the regime according to the MEK leadership.
“Courage is contagious,” described the presenter while showing videos of members of the groups resisting the theocratic regime. “They are trailblazers!”
“The regenerative power of the resistance units is incredible.”
Outlining her vision for tomorrow’s Iran, the NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi reaffirmed the NCRI’s commitments: a democratic republic, free elections, separation of religion and state, gender equality, autonomy for nationalities, peace with neighbors, and the end of executions, torture, and discrimination. After the regime falls, a provisional government will organize elections for a Constituent Assembly within six months.
The NCRI continues to fight narratives created in the global press calling them a cult, kooks, and other names. However, what I see is a military organization completely dedicated to removing the Iranian regime from power, sacrificing all other worldly pleasure in that pursuit.
