The result was is not all that surprising, as Mamdani had held a commanding polling lead in the Real Clear Politics polling average for several weeks. According to the final average, Mamdani was ahead by 14.3 percentage points, with comfortable leads over independent challenger Andrew Cuomo and perennial Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
A shocking last minute poll from AtlasIntel — one of the most accurate pollsters of the last two election cycles — did give the race some last-minute intrigue, however.
The survey found Mamdani leading by just five percentage points, securing 44 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 39 percent. While the final results remain unclear as of this report, the race was called for Mamdani less than an hour after polls closed.
As of this report, Mamdani leads with 50.2 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 40.8 percent, while Sliwa rounds out the race with 8.2 percent following a predictably strong showing in Staten Island. This comes with a little more than 51 percent of precincts counted, while roughly 1,100,000 votes remain outstanding.
Mamdani had largely become a leading symbol of the off-year election cycle due to his open support for communist policies and causes.
In one infamous post from December 2020, Mamdani reposted a tweet celebrating the election of a communist mayoral candidate in India. “Comrade Arya Rajendran, age 21 new Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram , Kerala. She will be the youngest mayor of a major city in the world. Here she leads a detachment of Red Volunteers,” reads the post, which was posted from an official communist party account.
In a link on his campaign website, Mamdani says his administration will focus on getting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) out of New York City facilities, end cooperation with the agency, protect personal data from outside jurisdictions and “bolster legal support” for immigrants. “Donald Trump is tearing at the fabric of New York City in his second term. He has deployed ICE agents to pluck New Yorkers from their families,” Mamdani said on his website.
President Trump has frequently vowed to combat Mamdani’s rule by surging federal resources to the state, expanding deportation efforts and more.
