Mark Hamill gave wife ultimatum to move to London, Ireland after Trump win—she talked him out of it
“The only way I can deal with it without going crazy and wanting to open my veins in a warm tub is to look at it like a thick, sprawling political novel,” said Mark Hamill.
Star Wars actor Mark Hamill revealed in a recent interview that he gave his wife an ultimatum after Donald Trump was reelected president last November, telling Marilou York that she could pick between two European countries to move to: the United Kingdom or Ireland.
However, York quashed the ultimatum, according to Hamill, who told Variety, “She’s very clever. She didn’t respond right away, but a week later she said, ‘I’m surprised you would allow him to force you out of your own country.’ That son of a b*tch, I thought. I’m not leaving.”
While Hamill may have decided to stay in the US, he doubled down on his disdain for Trump, suggesting that the president’s policies have made him debate taking his own life. “The bullying, the incompetence, the people in place…The only way I can deal with it without going crazy and wanting to open my veins in a warm tub is to look at it like a thick, sprawling political novel. It’s entertaining in a way because this could actually be the end. Our status in the world has been crippled, and that will reverberate for decades. Making Canada a 51st state? Do you know how offensive that is? And then taking over Greenland and renaming the Gulf of Mexico. The distractions are hilarious,” said Hamill.
The actor, best known for playing Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, would have joined other Hollywood celebrities who have fled the US over President Trump’s reelection, including Rosie O’Donnell, who moved to Ireland, and Ellen DeGeneres, who now resides in the UK with her wife Portia.
O’Donnell previously told Variety that she has no intention of moving back to the United States until it’s “safe” to do so. She has been publicly feuding with Trump since the 2016 election cycle.
“With the current political climate,” she said, “When would it be safe to come back with my child? I’m not going to push it before this administration is completely finished, and hopefully held accountable for their crimes.”
