[Yerevan, Armenia] Armenia is the first Christian country, established officially almost two thousand years ago and enabled by St. Gregory the Illuminator.

The area controlled by Armenians themselves has shrunk considerably, annexed by Turkey, and recently by Azerbaijan. This processed accelerated after the Armenian genocide at the beginning of the 20th century, where the ‘Young Turk’ regime exterminated approximately two million Armenian Christians, in an attempt to remove the Christian population entirely, to settle the ‘Armenian question’.

Now, the Trump administration may be looking to take more land from the Armenian people, under a reported 100 year lease to connect Azerbaijan with an Azeri exclave on the western side of Armenia. Azerbaijan is a Muslim country, supported heavily by the Turkish government.

Sources tell JP that the Armenian people don’t know what to believe regarding the reported corridor, and the position of the Pashinyan government regarding the issue. The Armenian MFA initially denied, then added credence to the report that indeed such a proposal was presented in negotiations with the Azeri government in Abu Dhabi, UAE earlier this month, but was rejected by the Pashinyan government.

Previously, the Armenian government has confirmed it is open to rebuilding old Soviet railways to connect the regions, but giving up sovereignty over the area is out of the question.

Thanks to representatives of the Armenian diaspora in France who preferred to remain anonymous and who managed to leverage their contacts within the government of the Republic of Armenia, our editorial team was able to obtain a confidential document titled “Memorandum of Understanding on the Creation of the Trump Bridge Transportation Corridor.” According to our sources, this text has already been approved in Armenia, Azerbaijan , and the United States, writes Periodista Digital.

In effect, Armenia is forced to surrender a large portion of its sovereign territory, which it is placing under the control and management of US forces, and accept the implementation of a major project for Azerbaijan and Turkey…

The memorandum stipulates the implementation of the Trump Bridge Bilateral Regional Economic Corridor and Defense Gateway project. This 42-kilometer transportation corridor will traverse the Syunik region in the Republic of Armenia.

Initially, the border will be controlled by soldiers without heavy weapons. But for the army, this will mean no more distance between Iran and the United States, the Islamic republic’s main enemy. The Zangezur corridor threatens to spark a major war in a region stretching from the Mediterranean to the South Caucasus, adds Periodista Digital.

According to the information, the project of a bilateral regional economic corridor and defense corridor is discussed here: “This is a 42-kilometer transport corridor passing through the Syunik region of Armenia. The corridor connects Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan, which has a strategic position on the border of Armenia and Iran. The creation of this corridor was one of the main demands of Azerbaijan after the 2020 war. Armenia has made efforts to prevent the creation of this corridor, as it could lead to the loss of a large part of Armenia’s territory. According to the document, Armenia retains sovereignty over the Syunik region, but despite this, it is clear that the transport corridor will be managed by a private US company, which has received the necessary license. The distribution of income from the use of the corridor is reflected in this agreement. The American company will receive 40 percent of the income, and Armenia will receive 30 percent. Thus, Armenia will be deprived of its territory for a minimum of 99 years,” the article noted, writes APA.

The article also notes that the memorandum also includes the deployment of American military forces to Armenian territory: “According to the information received, these will not be ordinary American troops; they will be members of a US private military company. It is believed that the number of these forces will be about 1,000 people, and they will be responsible for ensuring security along the corridor.”

Note that the U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye, Tom Barrack, told journalists in New York that his country has offered to take control of the Zangezur Corridor. According to him, the United States proposed to oversee the 32-kilometer-long Zangezur Corridor for a period of 100 years. “This way, both sides will be able to use the corridor,” the diplomat said.

Recall that reports had previously circulated suggesting that a U.S. company would be put in charge of the Zangezur Corridor. Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mnatsakan Safaryan, stated that the process must take place within the framework of Armenia’s sovereignty, jurisdiction, and territorial integrity.

JP will monitor developments on this story in connection on other reporting concerning Christian Armenia.
