Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker's Drama Explained

There’s been no shortage of drama when it comes to Kim Cattrall‘s relationship with her former Sex and the City costar Sarah Jessica Parker. Life & Style takes a closer look at why and when things broke down so badly between the actresses.

Why Are Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker Not on Good Terms?

The women weren’t particularly close while working on SATC from 1998 through 2004. Things took a nasty turn after the second Sex and the City movie in 2010, when Kim didn’t want to come back to reprise her Samantha Jones character in a third film.

Kim spoke out in 2008 about how she wasn’t super friendly with SJP on a personal level. She addressed how Sarah sat with SATC costars Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon at the 2004 Emmys and the three women seemed to avoid the Filthy Rich star at the event.

“Are we the best of friends? No. We’re professional actresses. We have our own separate lives,” Kim told The Telegraph about the awards show evening.

Sarah told Extra on September 17, 2017, about how devastated she was after learning that a third SATC film had been officially nixed.

“It’s over. We’re not doing it … I’m disappointed. We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story. It’s not just disappointing that we don’t get to tell the story and have that experience, but I think more so for that audience that has been so vocal about wanting another movie,” she explained while on a red carpet in New York City.

Reports began to surface that the reason the film had been squashed was because Kim was making outrageous “diva” demands.

“The only ‘demand’ I ever made was that I didn’t want to do a 3rd film and that was back in 2016,” she wrote in a post on X on September 29, 2017.

Kim took things a step further, calling out SJP publicly while appearing on Piers Morgan‘s Life Stories in October 2017.

“It’s quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I’ve been saying for almost a year of ‘no’ that I’m demanding or a diva. The answer was always no and a respectful, firm, no,” The How I Met Your Father star told the British broadcaster.

“And this is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker in that I think she could have been nicer,” Kim added.

Kim Cattrall Slammed Sara Jessica Parker for Sending Condolences After Her Brother’s Death

The England native erupted on Sarah for allegedly trying to use her brother Chris Cattrall’s death to maintain her “nice girl” persona.

After Kim shared the sad news about her brother’s passing at the age of 55 in February 2018, SJP left a message in the comments of the Instagram post.

“Dearest Kim, my love and condolences to you and yours and Godspeed to your beloved brother. Xx,” the Divorce star wrote.

Kim shared a text post on February 10, 2018, reading, “I don’t need your love and support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker.”

She went on to blast her former costar in the caption.

“My Mom asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?’” Kim wrote.

“Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona,” she added.

Sarah Jessica Parker Didn’t Ask Kim Cattrall to Participate in ‘And Just Like That’

While And Just Like That is a SATC reboot with Sarah, Cynthia and Kristin reprising their characters from the beloved HBO hit, Kim was never asked to take part.

Sarah — who served as an executive producer on both shows — said on The Hollywood Reporter‘s “Award Chatter” podcast in June 2022 that she respected Kim’s wishes not to reprise Samantha after the Central Intelligence star said she learned about the revival from social media.

“We did not ask her to be part of this because she made it clear that that wasn’t something she wanted to pursue, and it no longer felt comfortable for us, and so it didn’t occur to us,” Sarah explained about why Kim wasn’t contacted.

“That’s not ‘slamming’ her, it’s just learning. You’ve got to listen to somebody, and if they’re publicly talking about something and it doesn’t suggest it’s some place they want to be, or a person they want to play, or an environment in which they want to be, you get to an age where you’re like, ‘Well, we hear that,’” she added.

Kim later went on to make a cameo on the season 2 finale in August 2023 as Samantha. However, she and Sarah never came face to face, as they shot their scenes separately in what turned out to be a phone conversation.
