Who Is Sarah Jessica Parker’s Husband Matthew Broderick?

Matthew is an actor who was born on March 21, 1962, in New York City. His father, James Broderick, was also an actor, noted for performances in mid 1970s films including Dog Day Afternoon and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. He also starred in the TV series Family as patriarch Doug Lawrence. James died in 1982 at the age of 55, before Matthew became a huge star. His mother, Patricia Broderick, was a playwright and artist. She died in 2003.

Matthew Broderick Is an Acclaimed and Versatile Actor

Matthew broke big in in the 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, playing the title character. The role launched him into a successful film career while still devoting quite a bit of time to stage work and plays.

The star’s voice is known to generations of Disney fans after he voiced Simba in 1994’s The Lion King.

Matthew’s other notable film roles include 1996’s The Cable Guy, 1998’s Godzilla, 1999’s Election and Inspector Gadget, 2004’s The Stepford Wives, 2016’s Manchester by the Sea and 2023’s No Hard Feelings, showing his range from action films to drama and comedies.

The versatile star has won two Tony Awards for his stage work, taking home Best Featured Actor in a Play in 1983 for Brighton Beach Memoirs and Best Actor in a Musical for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 1995.

One of Matthew’s best known stage roles was as Leo Bloom in the Mel Brooks musical comedy The Producers. He and costar Nathan Lane reprised the parts for a 2005 film version of the play.

When Did Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick Start Dating?

The couple met in 1991, when Matthew directed a play at SJP’s brothers’ Pippin Parker and Toby Parker‘s Naked Angels Theater Company. Sarah had been in the acting business since childhood, making her mark as Broadway’s original Annie starting in 1979.

In 1996, Sarah and Matthew first hit the stage together in Broadway’s How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The same year, the duo discussed the start of their romance.

“My memory is that literally months passed when I didn’t ask her for a date,” he told The New York Times.

“Your memory is correct,” Sarah quipped, revealing their first date took place on February 1, 1992, when they went to the movies. “Then he left a very charming, very self-effacing message on the machine. You know, ‘Hi, it’s Matthew Broderick.’ You had to use your last name.”

“I had to give her my credits,” he joked.

When Did Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick Get Married?

One year after the couple’s Broadway debut, Sarah and Matthew tied the knot at New York City’s Angel Orensanz Synagogue on May 19, 1997. The low-key duo invited about 100 friends, telling them they were having a party and instead surprised them with a wedding ceremony. Sarah was already a fashion trendsetter, forgoing bridal white for a black dress.

The following year, SJP became the most iconic single woman on TV when Sex and the City premiered on HBO.

SJP was pregnant with the couple’s first child, son, James Wilkie Broderick, during SATC season 5 in 2002. Since Carrie was in a budding relationship with writer Jack Berger, the pregnancy was not written into the show and Sarah’s wardrobe was altered to give her more flowy and loose outfits to hide her baby bump.

James was born on October 28, 2022, in New York City.

Sarah and Matthew welcomed twin daughters Marion and Tabitha on June 22, 2009, via surrogate.
