Love Is Blind's Sara Sets Record Straight on TikTok About Ben
Love Is Blind season 8 star Sara Carton is setting the record straight on her discovery of *that* TikTok about fiancé Ben Mezzenga and their subsequent conversation.
As fans saw in episode 9, the oncology nurse, 29, was sent a viral TikTok video in which a woman named Andra Berghoff claimed to have previously dated Ben, 28, and alleged that he mistreated her and other women. Sara seemingly watched the video for the first time on the couch of her shared apartment with Ben, but she said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that what viewers saw on the Netflix series wasn’t exactly how it went down.
“What happened was, we were at a brewery with his friends, and so I left to give them time to talk with one another,” she said in the interview, published on Tuesday, February 25. “I was outside with my assistant producer and I was on my phone. I was scrolling, and then I received that TikTok in the Love Is Blind girls’ group chat. They’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is about Ben.’”
Sara said she watched the viral TikTok immediately and then showed it to Ben.
“I showed him the TikTok at the brewery first, and that’s when my assistant producer, of course, told my producer about the situation, so then they split us apart,” she continued. “We had to go back to the apartment and then film us talking about the TikTok, so that actually wasn’t his first time seeing it, it wasn’t my first time seeing it.”
In the March 2024 TikTok video, Andra did not directly name Ben but mentioned that one of season 8’s cast members played baseball for the University of Minnesota. He is the only current cast member to have done so. She tearfully described the person as someone who “treats women terribly and manipulates and lies all the time.”
Sara admitted that she was “very confused” at first about why people thought the video was about Ben since his name was never mentioned. However, she received confirmation when she saw another TikTok video about the situation.
“And then when we were on the couch, that’s when we noticed there was a second TikTok made talking about how he blocked her, and so that told me, ‘OK, this is actually about Ben.’ That was hard,” she explained.
Ben addressed the situation during a chat with Sara in episode 9, which was released on February 21. He told his fiancée that he blocked Andra because he didn’t “want to give her any ability to do anything with me if she decides to release my name or anything.” He also told Sara that he hadn’t talked to Andra in more than four years and claimed that the woman was “making stuff up.”
When asked about the nature of his relationship with Andra, Ben claimed that they met on Tinder but “never hooked up.”
“I wish I could give you a more, like, ‘Yeah, it was this dramatic breakup. I didn’t treat her well because of this reason or this reason.’ Or ‘I don’t feel proud of this or that,’ but like, I just honestly don’t remember. All I remember was it was four years ago, and it was a short amount of time that we were talking. I just honestly can’t remember what happened,” he continued.
In her interview with EW, Sara explained that she was “skeptical” of Ben during their discussion.
“I’ve trusted Ben, so I wanted to continue trusting him. But of course, this TikTok I needed to keep in the back of my mind. I wasn’t going to dismiss it or disregard it, by any means,” she said. “I just felt very conflicted and there were feelings involved, and I didn’t want to end the relationship just because of this one thing when we were so happy. It wouldn’t feel right to me to just immediately drop it.”
Fans can see how Ben and Sara’s relationship plays out following the TikTok scandal when episodes 10 through 12 drop on Netflix on Friday, February 28.
